Qualifications for Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) application

In order to be eligible for a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS), an individual must meet the following criteria:

  • The applicant must have received a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships quota from a single Canadian university in order to be eligible.
  • You are presently registered in a PhD program that necessitates a significant and proven research element. Examples of dual programs are MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, or JD/PhD.
  • You plan to engage in full-time PhD studies and research at the nominating institution either during the summer semester or the academic year immediately after the announcement of the findings.
  • You have not exceeded 20 months of full-time study in your current program. The duration of completed coursework is calculated from the date of enrollment in the PhD program.
  • By May 1, 2024, you must have completed a doctoral program that lasted no longer than 32 consecutive months. This includes collaborative graduate research programs, expedited programs, and previous enrollment without a Master’s degree. This stipulation is applicable if you are currently registered in a collaborative graduate research program, such as MD/PhD, MA/PhD, or DVM/PhD.
  • Applicants in this group can use the 32-month period, regardless of their previous enrollment status in a Master’s degree.
  • The duration of the study period is determined based on the applicant’s official registration date in the joint program, which includes the Master’s component as well.
  • The months of study completed are calculated from the date of enrollment in the doctoral program, without any prior enrollment in a master’s program, after directly transitioning from a bachelor’s degree.
  • Previous enrollment in and successful completion of a Master’s program without obtaining a degree. The duration of study is calculated based on the date of initial enrollment in the Master’s program.
  • Obtain an exceptional grade point average, or its equivalent, in both of your last two years of full-time study, based on the criteria established by your school. Prospective candidates are encouraged to seek information from the institution regarding the specific requirements for achieving a first-class average.
  • Furthermore, those who have received or currently hold a doctoral-level fellowship or scholarship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC are ineligible to enroll in or finish a PhD program.

Kindly be aware that only the Ph.D. component of a collaborative program is eligible for financial support.

Program of study eligibility:

  • To be eligible, doctoral programs must include a significant research component that concludes with a thesis, research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital, or exhibit that the institution or an expert reviews. These activities must be mandatory for program completion.
  • Programs of study that have a strong focus on practical application, such as clinical psychology, and joint graduate research programs that lead to a professional degree (such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, and JD/PhD), are also considered eligible as long as they have a significant independent research component, as described earlier.

The selection committees will evaluate and choose the nominees using three criteria, each of which will receive equal weight.
