Building on our history of innovative research and distinguished scholarship, we are committed to providing a special, engaging, and cooperative learning environment that encourages all of our teachers, researchers, staff, and students to reach their full potential.
Modern Dalhousie University
Dalhousie is still expanding. At Studley Campus, construction workers have been a common sight. The Marion McCain Arts and Social Science Building, which opened in 2001; the Kenneth C. Rowe Management Building, which was formally inaugurated in 2005; the Mona Campbell Building, which opened in autumn 2010; and the cutting-edge Ocean Sciences Building, which opened in June 2013, are some of the new facilities constructed in recent years. LeMarchant Place, which opened in September 2014 and is home to approximately 300 students and a range of student services, is the most recent addition.
In October 2006, Dalhousie University graduated more than 100,000 students. The achievement took place 140 years after Dalhousie granted Robert Shaw and Joseph Henry Chase the school’s first two Bachelor of Arts degrees in 1866. The first female graduate was Margaret Florence Newcombe, who earned a BA in 1885. James Robinson Johnston, the first black graduate of law school, graduated in 1896.
The exciting new chapter in Dalhousie’s history began on September 1, 2012. The Nova Scotia Agricultural College (NSAC) in Truro and the university merged to become the teachers of agriculture. This welcomed almost 1,000 new students, teachers, and staff to the Dalhousie community.
