Primary objectives of the Research Training Program (RTP):

Essential Information

The RTP is the primary initiative of the Commonwealth Government, designed to provide support to talented researchers in all areas of study. The program is administered by the University of Tasmania, in collaboration with the Commonwealth Department of Education. Recipients of the honor are granted all privileges and benefits outlined in the award by the University.

The University offers the RTP Stipend to support living expenses for the selected applicants pursuing Higher Degree Research. Moreover, a relocation allowance called RTP Allowance is provided to support the costs of moving to Tasmania for the purpose of participating in the research program. It is important to emphasize that overseas applicants who get permanent residency or citizenship in Australia while pursuing their studies will be required to pay the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) as decided by the University.

The University of Tasmania is offering Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarships for international students for the 2024-25 academic year. you are eligible to pursue Master’s and PhD programs at the University of Tasmania.

Advantages

Rate of remuneration:

  • Full-time applicants will be granted a stipend of AUD$31,500 per annum, which is exempt from taxation (based on the 2024 rate, subject to yearly adjustment). The stipend rate for future years remains unchanged from the previous year, but is updated according to the mechanism described in Part 5-6 of the Higher Education Support Act 2003.

Duration of Financial Assistance:

  • The support period starts from the date of enrollment in the Higher Degree by Research, unless the RTP Scholarship is granted after the start of the research program. The term of the grant is 3.5 years for doctorate candidates and 2 years for master’s candidates. Extensions are not allowed.
  • The duration of a candidate’s support term will be extended in direct proportion to the permitted periods of paid absence, as outlined in section 14 and approved by the University. Nevertheless, any periods of study completed towards the degree before the start of the RTP Stipend will result in a reduction of the support period for the stipend. There are currently no measures in place for extending the RTP Stipend.

Stipends –

  • Relocation Allowance: Recipients of the award have the opportunity to request a single relocation allowance of a maximum of AUD$2,000 in total. This allowance is intended to cover the expenses associated with relocating to Hobart, Launceston, or the Cradle Coast. It can be used by those moving from within Australia or from overseas upon earning the award.
  • The stipend covers the cost of one-way travel for the recipient of the award, their spouse/partner, and dependant children. The amount provided is equal to the cheapest economy airline to Hobart, Launceston, or Burnie. The award holder will be granted a per-kilometer allowance, established by the University, if they opt to travel by car. Relocation allowance claims must be submitted.
  • Once the travel has been concluded and the recipient of the prize has been registered.
  • Within a period of 6 months from the start date of the award.By utilizing the HDR
  • Relocation Claim form available in the Service Portal, together with digital copies of receipts.
  • Kindly be aware that the relocation claim does not cover expenses related to accommodation, rental bond, or meals.

Eligible Nationalities

  • This grant is available to students from any country.

Requirements for eligibility

Criteria for receiving RTP Stipend and RTP Allowance:

  • Enrollment in an authorized Higher Degree by Research at the University is required.
  • The applicant can be either domestic or international.

Requirements for RTP Stipend:

  • Candidates undertaking a Higher Degree by Research should not obtain income that exceeds 75% of their RTP Stipend rate, which is intended to cover general living expenses.
  • Income that is not related to the course of study or is not intended for ordinary living needs will not be taken into account.

Criteria for RTP Fee Offset:

  • Should be ineligible for a corresponding award or scholarship from the Commonwealth Government to cover the costs of a Higher Degree by Research tuition fees.
  • All domestic applicants will receive an RTfee offset, as long as they are not already receiving a comparable prize or scholarship.

Initiation and Postponement of RTP Scholarship:

  • Recipients of awards are required to promptly accept and begin their activities according to the specified dates in their offer letter.
  • To request a delay in the start of a program, a formal application must be sent to the Dean of Graduate Research. The application should include a justification for the delay, a proposed new date of enrollment, and the support of the supervisor.
  • Any delays occurring after 1 December 2023 will not receive approval.
  • If you fail to enroll and begin without obtaining permission for a delay, your offer will be withdrawn.

Duration of RTP Scholarship:

  • Contingent upon meeting the required academic standards.
  • The termination occurs either upon the expiration of the award or upon the submission of the thesis for inspection, whichever happens first.
