The RTP Stipend International Scholarship

Qualification

Candidates must be enrolled as international students at the time the prize is granted. The recipients of the Research Training Program (RTP) Stipend International Scholarship are required to register for a postgraduate research degree on a full-time basis. The Associate Dean (Research Education) with jurisdiction may grant a part-time RTP Scholarship* if the University is convinced that there are exceptional circumstances beyond the student’s control, such as medical issues, financial difficulties, or caregiver duties.

It is important for students who get a part-time scholarship to be aware that there may be financial consequences. Therefore, it is recommended that they consult with licensed tax agents for proper tax guidance. Approval for part-time study is contingent upon the visa regulations applicable to international students.

To be eligible for RTP scholarships, applicants must apply at the same time they apply for admission to their HDR course. They must also provide the necessary supporting information as instructed on the Scholarships Office website. Individuals who have already started their higher degree by research (HDR) program must submit their application by filling out the application form found on the Scholarships Office website.

Tenure

The scholarship can be maintained for a maximum of 14 full-time research periods for research doctorate programs or up to 7 research periods for research Master’s courses. The periods of study finished before the award’s start will shorten its duration.

There are no possibilities for extension.

The student must begin the scholarship by the census date of their starting intake and continue it throughout the year it is awarded. If a student has started their studies, the Scholarship can begin immediately. Postponing the Scholarship to the following calendar year is not allowed.

The recipient has the option to postpone their RTP stipend for a maximum of one research term, subject to approval from:

  1. their superior, and
  2. the appropriate Associate Dean (Research Education).

RTP stipends may be granted for the entire term of an authorized industry placement, research internship, or professional practice activity (as specified in Clause 33 of this document) under the following conditions:

  1. The beneficiary currently possesses and continues to meet the requirements for an RTP stipend.
  2. No additional revenue is obtained from these activities; and c. The RTP Stipend has not yet reached its maximum term.

Compensation and financial benefits

The recipients of the scholarship will be granted a yearly stipend of $40,109 (2024 rate), which will be adjusted annually on January 1 to account for inflation.

A student who has already started their research degree at the University of Sydney before receiving the scholarship is not eligible to receive a relocation payment. Permanent residents of Australia are ineligible to receive a travel allowance for the purpose of returning to their home country.

Recipients of the grant may also earn another award, grant, or income for their research degree, as long as the additional benefit is less than 75% of the scholarship. If this limit is surpassed, the scholarship will be discontinued. Compensation for work that is not relevant to the student’s research is exempt from this restriction.
