Objectives of the Ghana Academy

An Act of Parliament in 1959 led to the establishment of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS), with the goal of fostering the production of new knowledge, as well as its acquisition, distribution, and application in the service of national advancement.

It is headed by a Council that is comprised of a President, Vice-Presidents, an Honorary Secretary, and other elected members. Fellows are those who have excelled in the arts and sciences and have been inducted into this organization.

The Executive Secretary and the other administrative, secretarial, and clerical staff members make up the Academy’s Secretariat, which is responsible for the administration of the Academy’s activity. Under the direction of the Honorary Secretary, the Executive Secretary is accountable for managing the day-to-day operations of the Academy and is responsible for driving the strategic plan as well as other policy directives. These responsibilities are carried out with the general oversight of the Council.

Duty Description:

The Security Guard (Night) reports to the Executive Secretary and is tasked with the responsibility of securing the premises as well as the personnel. This is accomplished by patrolling the grounds, monitoring the building, equipment, vehicles, and access points, and inspecting these areas.

Scope of Work

  • Prevent losses and damage by reporting theft, unauthorized persons, illegal or suspicious activities, and unusual occurrences;
  • Complete reports by recording observations, information, and occurrences;
  • Establish cordial relationships with personnel;
  • Patrol the premises of the Academy and monitor movements to and from the premises at night;
  • Inspect buildings, equipment, and access points to guard against theft, property damage, violence, infraction of rules, intrusion, etc.;

The Required Qualifications, as well as Experience

  • Must have at least two years of relevant experience.
  • Must possess a minimum of WASSCE/SSSCE/GCE Ordinary Level/General Business Certificate Examination with credits in five subjects including English Language and Mathematics.
  • Any additional certification in a security-related area from a recognized institution will be an added advantage.

Qualities

  • Must be honest and have integrity;
  • Must be physically and medically fit and fall within a healthy and weight range;
  • Must have good interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written);
  • Must have good manners and comportment; and
  • Must not be older than thirty-five (35) years old by the end of December 2023.

Tenure

promotion based on performance, or until the incumbent reaches the mandatory retirement age of sixty years old, whichever comes first.

Compensation: The compensation is comparable to that of a Night Security Guard at a public university in Ghana.

Location: Accra.

The following items should be included in the application packet, whether it is submitted electronically or in paper copy:

  • A cover letter;
  • A curriculum vitae that has been brought up to date;
  • Copies of any relevant academic or professional credentials; and
  • A statement of approximately 2,500 words stating how the applicants propose to support the strategic plan of the Academy, which must be submitted for consideration for the positions of Executive Secretary and Procurement Officer.
