About the University of Otago

New Zealand’s oldest institution is the University of Otago, which was established in 1869 through an ordinance passed by the Otago Provincial Council. The newly established University received a generous endowment of 100,000 acres of pastoral land and was granted the authority to confer degrees in Arts, Medicine, Law, and Music.

The University commenced operations in July 1871 with a faculty consisting of only three Professors. One Professor was assigned to instruct in Classics and English Language and Literature, another was responsible for Mathematics and Natural Philosophy, and the third Professor covered Mental and Moral Philosophy as well as Political Economy.

In the subsequent year, a Professor of Natural Science was added to the team. In 1872, additional funding was given to expand the syllabus and create new lectureships. Lectures in Law were introduced in 1873, and courses in Medicine commenced in 1875. The delivery of lectures on Mining commenced in 1872, and in 1878, a dedicated School of Mines was founded.

The University was initially located in a structure, which was eventually converted into the Stock Exchange, situated on the grounds of John Wickliffe House on Princes Street. However, it relocated to its current location upon the completion of the northern sections of the Clocktower and Geology buildings in 1878 and 1879.

The School of Dentistry was established in 1907, while the School of Home Science (later known as Consumer and Applied Sciences) was established in 1911. Instruction in the fields of Accountancy and Commerce commenced in the year 1912. During the period between the two world wars, several new chairs and lectureships were established. In 1946, the Faculty of Theology commenced its teaching activities. The School of Physical Education was established in 1947.
