At a ceremony in Accra on March 31, 2020, Vice President Dr. Bawumia opened the Online Scholarship Application and Administration System for the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat.

It was the government’s goal to digitize and formalize the way it provides services so that it would be easier for people to get help from the government. The launch of the online portal was also meant to help the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat run scholarships in the country properly and efficiently.

Anyone can apply for a scholarship from home, take an aptitude test, and be interviewed in their district. These steps are all done online, so applicants don’t have to fly to Accra like they used to.

Information about the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat

As an extra-ministerial body under the Office of the President, the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat was set up in 1960. Its job is to manage all government scholarships, both in Ghana and other countries.

Following the Ghana Shared Growth and Development Agenda (GSGDA) and Goal 4 of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the organization’s major programs and activities focus on human resource development, employment, and productivity.

  • Giving people access to good schools
  • Developing human capital, increasing productivity, and improving working relationships are all important for meeting the country’s workforce needs.

These actions have resulted in giving more poor, smart, and deserving students in higher education better access to high-quality training.

Researchers have long known that there aren’t enough people with skills in STEM fields like science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). To fill this gap, different plans have been made over the years.

Making the process of applying for scholarships less centralized

Following H.E., the President of the Republic of Ghana’s strategic directive, the Secretariat started steps to make its scholarship awards and management more open and easy for everyone to understand.

Because of this, the award methods were tested first at the regional level during the 2018–2019 school year. In the 2019–2020 school year, they were narrowed down to the metropolitan, municipal, and district levels.

Scholarships for Ghanaian students going to public or private educational schools in the country increased by a large amount during this time. There were over 30,000 Ghanaian students who benefited from the plan during the 2019–2020 school year. They went to locally accredited tertiary institutions.

MOBILIZING THE PROCESSES FOR GIVING OUT SCHOLARSHIPS

To improve service delivery, a method had to be put in place that would use decentralized scholarship processes.

Candidates for government scholarships will no longer have to deal with annoying processes thanks to the new Online Scholarship Application and Administration System. It will also help the Secretariat run scholarships in the country more effectively and properly, and it will make it easier for more people to get them.
