Job Title: Senior HSE Trainer
Newmont Mining Corporation is one of the biggest gold producers in the world, and its most important properties are in Nevada, Peru, Australia, Ghana, and Suriname.
The Ahafo Mine is in the Brong-Ahafo region, and the Akyem Mine is in the Eastern region. Both are owned by Newmont’s Africa Operations. Ghana is also putting a lot of effort into near-mine exploration and development in order to replace its gold reserves every year. Newmont Africa also has programs in Ethiopia and Morocco that are just getting started.
Our Akyem and Ahafo mines have put a lot of money into making the communities where they are located more sustainable. These include setting up Development Funds in the areas where we do business in Akyem and Ahafo. Each mine will put US$1 per ounce of gold sold and 1% of its annual net profit before taxes into its own Development Fund.

This Job’s Role
To create, deliver, run, assess, and evaluate mandatory and required theoretical and practical Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) training for new employees, contractors, and daily hire staff on all HSE training and topics for Learning and Development (L&D) orientation and specific Human Resource training within the Newmont mine.
In this position, you’ll
- Training, making plans, and getting ready
- Help figure out and meet the staff’s training and development needs.
- Plan lessons based on the Health and Safety topic that is given.
- Look into, research, plan, and make training materials about health and safety in the mine.
- Help make changes to the training materials that are already in place.
- Develop good orientation programs and teach technical hazards training, such as how to work safely in confined spaces, at heights, with lockout, tagout, and try out, and with chemicals.
- Develop and deliver the safety part of the program for the labor pool.
- Coordinate the programs for the labor pool and set up the logistics for the program.
- Help set up the training room or class and get ready for training before it starts.
- Lastly, Help make and review plans and schedules for training to meet the needs of the business.
Training Assessments
- Both Newmont employees and contractors need to be trained and evaluated based on the approved and required Newmont Africa Health and Safety principles.
- Assess experienced employees to find out what their current skill levels are.
- Find the gaps in skills that the assessment shows and suggest the right level of training that will be needed.
- Keep full training records and rosters for all classroom training given, as required by Newmont and the Learning and Development department.
- Help evaluate the health and safety training programs that Newmont already has.
- Help and guide the people who can’t read or write well so they can understand the questions and choose the right answer.
Training Syllabus
- Help make Health and Safety training modules and other training materials.
- Follow Newmont Africa’s training policies to the letter and make sure they are in line with global training standards.
Carrying Out Training
- Stress the importance of health and safety in all parts of training to create a “zero harm” culture.
- Do general orientations and any other required Health and Safety trainings for both new employees and contractors.
- Health and safety training for employees and contractors should be done both with an instructor and in person.
- Give current employees and contractors a refresher course on health and safety.
- Keep up with all processes and procedures, as described in Learning Solution (LSO).
- Make sure that all training records are entered into SAP and that all training evaluations are filed in the right place.
Evaluations of training
- Prepare and give reports to the Learning and Development department about how training went and what was learned.
- Check on the progress of employees and contractors on the job site and train and teach them as needed.
- Give contractors feedback on the different trainings they’ve taken.
- Make weekly reports on training.
Formal Qualifications (including Professional Registrations):
- Health and Safety Higher National Diploma.
- Extra Information
- Certification for workplace trainers and assessors is better.
- Certification as a Health, Safety, and Environment Officer (MINCOM).
- In a large-scale gold mining project, you need to have a good understanding of both the theory and practice of health and safety.
- Competency-based curricula need to be well understood.
Experience
- At least three to five years of experience teaching, training, and delivering information, preferably in a Health and Safety setting.
- Skills with tools
- Excellent abilities to teach and lead.
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Strong presentation skills.
- Good skills with computers – MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).
- Skills in keeping an eye on and managing information.
- Good skills at planning, organizing, and setting priorities.
