POSITION: General Foreperson – Mine Operations

Newmont Africa Operations has two gold mining operations in Ghana: the Ahafo Mine in the Brong-Ahafo area and the Akyem Mine in the Eastern region. About This Role:

Plan, coordinate, manage, and execute short, medium, and long-term operational tasks for load and haul in the pit, including;

  • Safety.
  • Digging.
  • Loading
  • Hauling.
  • Road maintenance.

In this role, you will

Mining Operations Planning and Execution.

  • Execute short, medium, and long-term mining plans.
  • Deliver a weekly activity plan in coordination with Mine Maintenance to guarantee that all necessary equipment is available by the end of the week.
  • Oversee the plan’s completion by putting together a strong ‘bench strength’ team and closing any gaps that may prevent targets from being met.
  • Understand and manage important environmental challenges related to the reclamation, waste disposal, and spill management processes.
  • Coordinate actions with processing plant management to ensure the continuity of overall operations.
  • Ensure that all haul roads are well maintained and free of sharp rocks.
  • Support the conceptualization of critical infrastructure projects to support mine operations procedures.
  • Manage the load and haul teams so that they can complete their primary responsibilities efficiently and effectively.
  • Investigate methods for enhancing mine yield targets (e.g., equipment efficiency, tire life).
  • Identify any performance and work-related issues and implement methods to address them.
  • Implement solid Mine Operations work plans and stick to them for training purposes.
  • Create a budget for the Mine Operations team and send it to the Superintendent for final evaluation and approval.
  • Manage and administrate the allocated budget within the specified parameters.
  • Analyse daily output and cost data to ensure that the load and haul department is meeting overall production and budget targets.
  • Compile and submit all requisitions for approval to the Mine Operations Superintendent.

Mine Operations Optimization and Continuous Improvement.

  • Implement possibilities for continuous improvement, particularly those most relevant to
  • Mine Operations activities.
  • Report any accidents and events within the work group so that management can identify opportunities for improvement in work procedures.
  • Remain accountable for the Ahafo pit operations’ success in meeting production targets safely, at the highest levels of productivity, and at the lowest cost.

Stakeholder Management and Engagement.

  • Work with Planning Engineers, Grade Control Engineers, Maintenance Foremen,
  • Processing and Underground Mine Captains, Drill and Blast, and Dewatering to plan, design, integrate, and support Mine Operations activities.
  • Coordinate with other Newmont divisions to find possibilities to improve mine efficiency and productivity.
  • Coordinate mine equipment maintenance with the Maintenance Department.
  • Collaborate with operating and non-operating divisions to create short-term operating objectives and budgets.
  • Collaborate with the Training Department to plan and deliver national worker training to sustain and build on Newmont’s worldwide best practices.
  • Contribute to all mine planning and maintenance schedules in collaboration with the Mine Operations Superintendent.
  • Oversee that the mine’s operations adhere to set statutory criteria.
  • Overseeing the work done by on-site contractors undermines operations and holds them to quality standards.

Health and Safety Management.

  • Responsible for the Shift Change procedure (PSM), ensuring that Supervisors engage Operators and that all Operators are using FRM booklets.
  • Align the Mine Operations department with the requirements of Ghanaian government agencies, financing institutions, shareholders’ interests, environmental, health, and safety legislation, and mining rules in terms of compliance.
  • Adhere to internal Newmont health and safety standards.
  • Accept personal responsibility for the health and safety of all employees under his or her direction.
  • Provide hands-on help during operational activities while also ensuring that safe work procedures are followed.
  • Inspect all work areas for faded signage, substandard LV parking places, substandard windrows at crossroads and garbage dumps, littering in work zones, and parking equipment near highwalls.
  • Work with the Health and Safety Department to hold regular safety meetings, staff meetings, and safety inspections.
  • Attend the regular safety inspections and meetings.
  • Periodically verify the risk of fatalities in mine operations.
  • Investigate all reported occurrences and complete the closure within four weeks.

Staff management.

  • Create an appropriate work atmosphere to inspire employees and contractors to maximize effectiveness, productivity, and operational expenses.
  • Collaborate with HR to manage direct reports and conduct performance appraisals.
  • Recommending additional / suitable training courses and development activities in accordance with Newmont’s people development program(s).
  • Arranging for employees to receive specific training.
  • Helping to develop clear succession plans.
  • Discipline poor performance or conduct.
  • Managing and approving personnel’s leaves under the section.
  • Improving communication with employees through regular feedback, contact, meetings, and briefings, etc.
  • Increasing employee ‘bench strength’, particularly female headcounts.
  • Conducting thorough succession planning for the Mine Operations team.

Your Training, Skills, and Experience Checklist

Formal qualifications (including professional registrations).

  • Bachelor’s degree in mining/civil engineering, geology, or a similar subject.

Additional knowledge.

  • Understanding of continuous improvement concepts.
  • Experienced Mine Captain with Minerals Commission accreditation in Ghana.
  • Experience with Mine Dispatch Systems.
  • A minimum of 8 to 10 years of mining expertise is required, with at least 5 to 6 years of supervisory experience.
