ROLE: Literacy and Digital Skills Coordinator

Company Profile

EduSpots, a UK and Ghanaian organization, connects, trains, and equips volunteer community educators to offer transformative literacy and STEM opportunities in ‘Spots’ that focus on female empowerment and environmental action. We are creating community-based changemakers.

Since 2016, we have worked with over 250 local volunteers to help 50 communities develop and operate community-led and owned education spaces called ‘Spots’ and move to our ‘Dream Spot Model’. A global community-led education paradigm with network interaction is being developed.

Our 16-person Ghanaian team works part-time and remotely to create collaborative learning opportunities for over 15,000 students of all ages through our Ignite and Community Leadership in Development (CLEd) Programmes, which include leadership training for our EduLit, EduSTEM, EduKidz, and Ignite Girls clubs and locally designed education projects. Job Description.

We need an organised, active, and passionate educator with pedagogical and creative skills to promote EduSpots’ literacy and digital skills work.

This important full-time position, reporting to the Education and Research Manager, will lead our volunteer-driven EduLit Clubs program for Junior High Level students, which engages students from 20 Ghanaian communities in a variety of practical literacy activities to promote creativity, critical thinking, and leadership, with a focus on community context and play-based learning. The EduLit Peer Mentor program motivates and grows our literacy WhatsApp network of over 100 community-based literacy volunteers. The coordinator will oversee it.

They will also create, research, and purchase literacy-related and digital learning tools for the organization, volunteers, and students. This position will oversee an organization-wide literacy and digital skills development strategy that will be integrated into our volunteer leadership and learner programs.

They will thrive in a fast-paced environment where we prioritize the quality and sustainability of our grassroots volunteers’ effect. They can add significant input to their work to improve quality and effect. Moreover, They will be willing to learn and able to produce high-quality products independently in a remote working environment using Canva or other design tools and good IT and design abilities.

An in-house training programme with external facilitators is a significant part of EduSpots’ commitment to staff professional development. High-quality advisors advise staff on career development. Main duties and responsibilities

  • To coordinate initiatives for boosting literacy growth across the network.
  • Support the creation and ongoing review of a curriculum for our EduLit groups.
  • Create content to help the clubs, such as a monthly action plan, mentoring sessions, and any supporting information.
  • Lead a monthly Zoom session for EduLit volunteers, providing training advice and allowing them to share their thoughts and contribute.
  • Lead all communication with EduLit volunteers, including WhatsApp, phone calls, and email as required.
  • Create in-house context-specific resources for inclusion in EduLit kits that correspond to the curriculum design.
  • To take the lead on the Reading Buddies initiative and encourage Spots to participate.
  • Track participation in our EduLit Programme and manage all program monitoring and assessment.
  • Manage the EduLit Peer Mentor.
  • To develop an integrated digital learning plan, including the establishment of training sessions on digital skills and online safety for network rollout.
  • Create tools to help volunteers use the app and digital devices efficiently.
  • Lead the research for effective literacy development applications to be stored on tablets, as well as training volunteers on how to use them effectively.
  • Lead the long-term literacy-focused collaboration with UK school partners.
  • Lead the procurement and distribution of books by local authors and relevant textbooks, as well as the development of our in-house storybooks, in collaboration with the larger Programmes team and the Head of Operations.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Communications to ensure that the activities and impact of our literacy and digital learning work are conveyed to a broader audience.
  • Supporting the Ignite Programme’s impact reporting and evaluation, as well as the digitization process.

Other

  • Ensure that all administrative activities related to the function are completed accurately.
  • To adhere at all times to the organization’s policies, procedures, and staff performance requirements as outlined in the Staff and Volunteer Handbook.
  • Any other duties that may be legitimately necessary under the function, such as communications team support or online course support.

Required Skill or Experience

Knowledge & Experience

  • At least three years of experience in literacy development, preferably planning and running a junior high-level literacy programme.
  • Experience in programme development and management, as well as a knowledge of the importance of meeting deadlines.
  • Experience designing educational resources (such as curricula, student activities, and teacher/facilitator manuals).
  • A good training facilitator who can demonstrate excellent teaching and excite volunteers.
  • Strong IT knowledge and abilities, as well as a desire and aptitude to provide volunteers and learners with the digital skills they require to survive in today’s environment.
  • Experience with online educational delivery in various formats (e.g., via Zoom, WhatsApp, and phone call)
  • Experience collaborating with volunteers to drive educational change.
  • Experience with home-based and online working

  • Strong design skills (e.g., Canva), as well as the ability to leverage a variety of resources and communication techniques to present information to a varied mix of community-based volunteers.

  • Self-motivated, proactive, and capable of maintaining a high level of performance with minimal supervision.
  • Strong IT knowledge and skills, with an interest in using educational technology to drive outcomes.
  • Ability to operate under pressure, prioritise tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to successfully respond to comments, continually looking for ways to better their own and the organisation’s performance.
  • Flexible, able to respond to change and adapt.
  • The capacity to understand and adhere to agreed-upon international working standards, as well as to encourage high professional standards within their team.
  • A strong personal affinity with EduSpots’ mission, vision, and values (community leadership, play, care, passion, teamwork, and long-term impact) combined with a genuine passion for educational equity and community-led development, as well as the ability to collaborate with grassroots volunteers who are our network’s leaders.
