Role Description: Senior Surveyor I

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Senior Surveyor I job is in the middle of the Surveyor career path. The main job is to look at ships and other marine structures during and after construction and report on whether or not they meet the requirements for keeping the ship in Classification with ABS and meeting the legal and special service requirements for the Safety of Life at Sea, Loadline, Tonnage, Cargo Gear, and Pollution Prevention Certification. When necessary, they are in charge of running office routines and keeping an eye on how business is going at an assigned port.

Here’s what you’ll do:

• Acts as a professional expert for the company in applying rules, regulations, requirements, ideas, principles, and processes that are related.
• Performs routine inspections of classed ships, platforms, or other nautical structures, as well as inspections at shipyards to check for classification and legal compliance.
• Makes inspection and survey reports that are exactly correct and on time.
• Helps clients fix problems in their areas of expertise by talking to them.
• Keeps survey files in their area of duty organized and up to date.
• Keeps up-to-date on new methods and developments that could affect the technical scope of tasks and suggests changes to surveying processes and safety programs as needed.
• Makes suggestions for new ways to solve problems and makes changes to methods, processes, or designs as needed.
• Plans, schedules, and arranges the different parts of surveying work, as well as keeping an eye on the quality of the work done.
• Keeps an eye on the work and tasks that subordinate surveyors are doing to make sure that the quality, content, consistency, and continuity of the work are maintained.
• Offers leadership, advice, and training to surveyors with less experience or who are at a lower level.
• Promotes the services and skills of ABS to customers and people who might become customers.

Education and Experience

• Qualifications from a tertiary institution in a relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum two-year program); or Qualifications from a marine or nautical institution and relevant seagoing experience as a certified ship officer, and the minimum requirements and knowledge listed for Surveyor II.
• At least three years’ worth of experience as a Surveyor II.
• Understanding of ABS’s technical strategy in their area of the marine industry or at least eight years of work in an engineering or survey capacity with an IACS member classification society.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• In some areas of training, the right certifications and/or licenses may be needed.
• Ability to learn the ABS Rules, Guides, statutory regulations, and related directions, as well as the ABS Employee Safety Policy, well enough to do the job.
• Ability to read technical plans and have a general idea of how ships are built and how they work.
• Ability to do polls in the way that is asked.
• Knowing how to use computer tools or software packages that are needed for the job.
• For group projects, you need to know how the different technical connections work.
• Know how the tools and machines on ships work.
• Ability to talk and write in English about knowledge that is important to the assigned area of technical expertise.
• Ability to look at problems and suggest ways to fix them.
