Job Title: Associate Scientist – Behavioral Change 

The Alliance of Bioversity International (www.bioversityinternational.org) and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) (www.ciat.cgiar.org) provide research-based solutions that use agricultural biodiversity to improve food systems and people’s lives. Malnutrition, climate change, the loss of biodiversity, and environmental degradation are all problems that affect the whole world.

With the help of new partnerships, the Alliance gathers evidence and spreads new ideas to change food systems and landscapes in ways that are good for the planet, bring about economic growth, and feed people when there is a climate crisis.

The Alliance is a part of the CGIAR, which is a global partnership for research on food security.

About the position

This job will help CGIAR’s Excellence in Agronomy Initiative (EAI) improve its social science and behavior change parts. Most of the work will be done in the West and Central Africa Region, which is based in Ghana. The position will help EiA Use Case teams do user and behavior research that takes into account the different needs, preferences, and factors that affect the behavior of different user groups, with a focus on gender and other groups that have been left out.

This will require making and coordinating plans that help implementer teams and partners change their behavior, such as training these teams and helping them design protocols and tools. So, the goal of the job is to integrate and keep an eye on behavioral science research activities and interventions in the implementation of the EIA, mostly in the West and Central Africa region but also, if necessary, in other EIA regions. This includes collecting good data in a timely manner. It will be part of the EiA’s working group on changing people’s behavior.

Main responsibilities

  • Help EiA use case teams conduct user and behavior research to learn about the different needs, preferences, and behavior drivers of different user groups in relation to specific solutions, with a focus on gender and other marginalized groups.
  • Co-create and put into use for the Use Case Teams a set of tools for user research and changing behavior.
  • Help add user and behavior change research to the protocols of the EiA Use Case workflow and keep track of it.
  • Help the working group at EiA change people’s behavior.
  • Work closely with the human-centered and UX Design experts in EiA to help use case teams figure out how to use the results of user and behavior change research in the product design process.
  • Design and coordinate training in user and behavior research methods for CGIAR and NARS scientists and partners, especially in West and Central Africa or as needed.
  • Work with EiA colleagues and teams that have methodological ties to research on user and behavior change.
  • Lead the design of a user and behavior change research database that combines qualitative and quantitative data on the different user groups across use cases and target countries – Do and help with the synthesis of multiple data sets, and build what you learn into the program. MVP solutions
  • Finds ways to work together and creates new projects with different partners in a timely manner.

Education and requirements

  • PhD in social science or anthropology with research experience in the field
  • Proven experience using user and behavior change research, and experience with mixed methods research.
  • At least 5 of his or her articles have been published in ISI journals.
  • Helps make at least one (1) successful proposal better and put it into action.
  • Approaches like Design Thinking, Human-Centered Design, and User-Experience Design
  • Work experience in the Global South, preferably in the agricultural sector
  • If you have worked for CGIAR or a similar organization before, that’s a plus.
  • Good analytical skills to explain science to people at a higher level and also to people who make policy.
  • Deep knowledge of the ongoing national needs and regional priorities of the Western African region and how this position can depend on this.
  • Advanced spoken and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work in an environment with people from different fields and cultures.
  • Ability to communicate with other teams from different fields working on the same project.
  • Must be able to work alone with little supervision, but also be able to work as part of a team to get tasks done.
  • Strong ability to organize, prioritize, and coordinate work, as well as to work on your own and under pressure.
  • Ability to work with people from different cultures.

Terms of employment

This job will be based in Accra, Ghana, and will be filled by someone from outside the country. The first contract will be for up to two years, with a six-month trial period, and can be extended based on how well the job is done and how many resources are available. This job is at level BG09 on a scale of 14 levels, where level 14 is the highest.
