ROLE: Safety Officer – Mobile Equipment & Traffic Management
AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana) Limited’s Obuasi Gold Mine is nearing the end of its reconstruction phase in order to become a modern, efficient, and long-term profitable enterprise. The underground mining operation is completely mechanized and designed to mine up to 5,000 tons of ore per day on average.
We are looking for an experienced and self-motivated individual to join our team as MOBILE EQUIPMENT AND TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SAFETY OFFICER
The goal of this function is to implement and enhance systems for monitoring the application and enforcement of site mobile equipment and traffic control policies, plans, and initiatives. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the reduction of mobile equipment incidents on the job site by executing the tasks required to assure adherence to mobile equipment standards, mining rules, completion of safety training, and traffic management plans.
PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Attend any environmental training meetings that are scheduled and assigned to you.
- Take action on all environmental complaints and ideas made by employees.
- Identify and contribute to the preparation of the annual budget, and ensure that the direct manager or manager who has been removed is notified of cost items.
- Assist in the planning and execution of initiatives aimed at improving traffic management, including coordination with other departments such as Mining and Engineering.
- Assist the direct supervisor with the implementation of programs to enforce site traffic regulations, mobile equipment standards, and policies across the site.
- Assist in the establishment of programs to increase pedestrian safety, such as walkway audits or the construction of mine walkways.
- Drivers are monitored using in-vehicle monitoring systems and other technology to discover concerns that need to be rectified and communicated to leadership via direct supervisor.
- Coordination with other relevant departments is required to ensure an effective investigation of mobile equipment-related incidents across the site.
- Assist the direct manager in completing the Department’s job within the agreed budget, deadlines, and KPIs.
- Assist the operations team by remaining visible on the ground and undertaking site visits to ensure relevant risks are adequately addressed.
- Demonstrate Safety Leadership and enhance the Culture of Safety, Health, and Sustainable Development throughout the mine.
- Environmental management that is integrated into the team’s work plan and performed during task execution
- Drive the execution of safety policies and strategies throughout AGAG departments and contractor operations with zeal.
EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATION, AND TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES
Qualification
- Certificate of Competency as a Health, Safety, and Environmental Officer from the Ghana Minerals Commission.
- A degree in engineering, physical sciences, or a similar discipline from a recognized institution is required.
- A basic professional qualification in health and safety (NEBOSH IGC or higher) is required.
- A recognized institution’s ISO 45001 Lead Auditor Certification will be advantageous.
Experience
- A minimum of three years of experience in the mining business is required.
Technical abilities
- A thorough awareness and working knowledge of safety laws and regulations is required.
- Knowledge of safety management systems, such as ISO 45001.
- Has successfully completed the Accident Investigations course and can use this knowledge to conduct investigations for moderate or high-risk events, as well as participate as a team member in High-Risk Accident investigations.
- Strong presentation and communication skills, as well as exceptional report-writing abilities, are required.
Other Qualifications
- Must have a valid Ghanaian driver’s license and be able to demonstrate appropriate driving skills.
- Excellent knowledge of Microsoft programs.
