Job Title: Community Research Supervisor

Job Description

IITA Ghana is running the Program for Seed System Innovation of Vegetatively-propagated Crops (VPCs) in Africa (PROSSIVA). The goal of PROSSIVA is to develop and test packages of innovations to strengthen functional seed systems of VPCs (Yam, Cassava, Banana, Sweet Potato) and help smallholder farmers and consumers in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) by 2030.

So, under the PROSSIVA Program, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) wants to work with Community Research Supervisors.

Where We Stand

The Community Research Supervisors will be in charge of all the actions that help the program’s stakeholders in the Northern and Ashanti regions of Ghana.

Key Responsibilities

  • Help people set up and take care of display trials (DTs).
  • Find one lead farmer (a person with a lot of influence) in each town to work closely with.
  • Find good places for demonstration tryouts (DTs) with the help of the community.
  • Collect information about the age, family size, marital status, education level, amount of land used to grow yam, gender-specific roles in the seed and ware yam value chain, etc., of the farmers who are part of the project. Also, find out where their plots are located.
  • Help groups that want DTs to set them up and keep them going.
  • Regularly keep an eye on DTs and let seed yam entrepreneurs and yam farms know about new technologies that can help them make more money.
  • Make sure that farmers take part in all of the work done in the DTs, such as preparing the land, preparing the planting materials, planting, weeding, reaping, and applying fertilizer, herbicide, and pesticide.
  • Write down everything that happened on the DTs and includes proof (videos and pictures) in your reports.
  • Take part in setting up and running field days (planting, green, and brownfield days) to look at activities on DTs and teach people about better ways to do things.
  • Take part in teaching out-growers and seed entrepreneurs on how to make, handle, package, ship, transport, and store yam planting materials in the best way.
  • Information on input suppliers, seed makers, and sellers should be written down.
  • Help the store owners of private seed companies with how to handle and store seed yams.
  • Send a weekly report of what you’ve been doing to your boss.
  • Any other tasks that the boss gives them.

Locations: Ejura and Tamale are duty stations.

Terms of appointment:

  • This is an NRS (Nationally Recruited Staff) job.
  • The first meeting is for two years, but it could be extended based on how well the person does and how much money is available.

Skills or Experience Needed

  • B.Sc./B.Tech. in Agriculture, Botany, Agricultural Economics, Agronomy, Agricultural Extension, Crop Protection, Environmental Biology, or a similar field.
  • Experience working with National Agricultural Research Institutes both online and in person. Working with Private Seed Yam Companies and other people in the yam value chain in Ghana is a plus.
  • At least 3 years of experience working with root and plant crops that grow from sprouts.

Core competencies:

  • The person in this role must be focused on getting things done and be able to handle and meet multiple, sometimes conflicting, organizational, partner, and other stakeholder needs on the ground.
  • Excellent writing and spoken English communication skills. It would be helpful to know any of the local dialects of the target areas.
  • He or she must be able to work well with other people and be a good team player.
  • Has good interpersonal and networking skills.
  • Working with local partners to carry out tasks has been shown to be effective.
  • It’s important to know how to use Excel and Word, as well as how to use ICT tools to collect data.
