Head of Gender at ACET

Summary of the Job

The Head of Gender will make sure that ACET’s work on gender equality and economic change is well thought out and done. He or she will also help other ACET teams and our partners add a focus on gender to all of our work.

Roles and Responsibilities

Be in charge of ACET’s portfolio on gender and economic change. This will include managing staff and fellows who are working on gender and economic transformation projects and making sure they are in line with the ACET Strategy and Theory of Change.  Some important events will be:

  • The African Transformation Report on Gender Equality/Equity and Economic Transformation (ATR4) is about this.
  • Scorecard for gender equality
  • Integration of gender into all of ACET’s work
  • Lead ACET’s policy research and technical work on gender equality and empowering women in terms of ideas. This will include making a world-class program for gender equality that provides high-quality research and thought leadership on gender equity, equality, women’s economic empowerment, and any other areas that may be important.
  • Lead the team that is in charge of giving ACET and its partners advice on projects and programs that have to do with gender problems, practices, and policies.
  • Giving high-quality analysis and advice on how ACET’s policy proposals affect women and men.
  • Working with ACET partner policy institutes and helping them when they need to do gender research Together with the M&E team, ACET is working to track gender equality and inclusion measures and their effects. This is to make sure that ACET partners get accurate reports on the gender portfolio.
  • Writing parts of strategy documents, briefs, policy dialogues, and other documents linked to gender statistics

The growth of ACET team members and the oversight of the gender team

  • Train and develop ACET staff on programming that takes gender into account, and coach or teach junior staff to help them build their technical skills.
  • Give ACET study teams training on how to track and evaluate the effects of policy actions on gender across all program verticals.

Resource Mobilization

  • Design and create program strategies for female equality and economic change to make it easier to raise money.
  • Help the fundraising team bring in money so that the gender portfolio can grow.

Communication and Publications

  • Help write articles, blogs, policy notes, and papers that ACET and its partners will use in their writings. This will include using information from old reports to make new knowledge goods and briefs.
  • Be a voice for female equality in different places and with the media
  • Brief the EVP and President on how to communicate about gender and economic change.
  • Any other tasks that may be given from time to time to help ACET reach its goals

Education/Experience

  • PhD or Master’s degree in gender economics or a similar field, such as economics, gender studies, development studies, political science, or sociology.
  • At least 8 years of study and evaluation experience in gender economics after getting a master’s degree. Having done this in Africa before will be a plus. Having experience in Africa will be a plus.
  • Worked on policies for female equality and/or equity in Africa before.
  • It will be helpful to learn how the economy changes.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities 

  • Proven research and analysis skills, including doing desk research, literature reviews, and putting together results.
  • Excellent analytical skills and the ability to put together complicated pieces of information in papers, reports, and speeches.
  • A track record of managing and developing people in a good way
  • Excellent written and spoken English speaking skills. Working in French would be a plus.

Personal

  • Excellent people skills, including the ability to work with and talk to coworkers of all levels and from different countries.
  • Ability to work well on your own and as part of a team. Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines with accuracy and attention to detail.
