The United Nations, in partnership with The Nippon Foundation, is pleased to announce that applications are currently being accepted for the 2025 session of the esteemed UN-Nippon Foundation Fellowship Program. This fellowship, which is fully supported, provides a unique opportunity for mid-level government officials and professionals from developing nations to enhance their knowledge and skills in maritime affairs and the law of the sea.

An all-encompassing fellowship experience

The fellowship, which lasts for nine months, offers a distinctive educational opportunity. It commences with a three-month training period at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Subsequently, there is a six-month period dedicated to conducting research and studying at a designated university. Participants will gain the essential knowledge and abilities to make substantial contributions to the creation and execution of ocean policies and initiatives in their respective nations.

About United Nations-Nippon Foundation Fellowships

The United Nations – Nippon Foundation Fellowship offers advanced training to government officials and mid-level professionals from developing countries. The training focuses on ocean affairs, the law of the sea, and allied fields such as marine science, all of which support management frameworks.

Participants will acquire knowledge on international legal frameworks, essential topics, and optimal approaches in maritime affairs, gain familiarity with the operations of the United Nations, and enhance their professional abilities. The fellows will also engage in independent research, under the guidance of academic mentors, and produce a written thesis on a topic of their choosing.

Fellows must return to their home countries after completing the Fellowship and use their in-depth knowledge and extensive experience to support the development of comprehensive ocean policies and the enforcement of the legal framework provided by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and related instruments. This can be achieved by planning, carrying out, and/or evaluating certain initiatives meant to improve the current system.

The United Nations-Nippon Foundation Fellowship requires the following academic standing:

  • The United Nations-Nippon Foundation Fellowships for 2025 in the USA are fully funded opportunities for individuals to pursue fellowship-level studies at universities in the United States.

Requirements for United Nations-Nippon Foundation Fellowship:

To qualify for this fellowship, applicants need to:

  • Must be within the age range of 25 to 40.
  • Hold at least a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification.
  • Possess a demonstrated history of performing sophisticated scholarly investigations.
  • Reside in a nation that is in the process of advancing and improving its economic and social conditions.
  • Presently occupy a position of moderate seniority in the government or professional sector, with direct involvement in matters pertaining to the ocean or maritime law.
  • Suggest a research or study program that will have a direct positive impact on their country’s ocean affairs and maritime law policies.

Instructions for the application:

  • To submit your application, please download the form and complete all the fields digitally. Please use sentence case while filling in the data (e.g. John Smith). Avoid using full capital letters for your replies (e.g. JOHN SMITH). Utilize your electronic or handwritten signature and select the “Save” option to preserve your modifications. Please submit the form in either Word or PDF format.
  • It is necessary to answer each question in a clear and comprehensive manner in order to guarantee that the application will be completed. When filling out the form, candidates should specifically focus on parts 18, 19, and 20. Candidates may append a maximum of one supplementary page of identical dimensions, if required.
  • The Application form comprises two documents: The two required forms are the “Personal History and Proposed Research/Study Programme Form” and the “Nomination and Recommendation Form”. Both forms require signatures, with the first form to be signed by the applicant and the second form to be signed by the official nominating entity. Please return the forms to us in either Word or PDF format.
  • After filling out and signing both the “Nomination and Recommendation Form” and the “Personal History and Proposed Research/Study Programme Form,” please send them by email directly to DOALOS at doalos@un.org, adhering to the specified dates.

Two mandatory documents:

  • Nomination and Recommendation Form: Must be filled out and endorsed by the body that is nominating you.
