Fellowships Abroad: EMBO New Venture Fellowships 2024

Obtaining a degree is consistently advantageous for one’s profession, yet it can provide challenges when faced with certain financial obstacles. EMBO is providing New Venture Fellowships to exceptional students to support their study expenditures.

Eligible candidates for the fellowships must have a minimum of two years of postdoctoral research experience and no more than two years of experience as an independent group leader at the time of application. Proposed projects should make a substantial contribution to our comprehension of biological processes and foster multidisciplinary research.

About EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organization)

EMBO was established in 1963, following a meeting of prominent European biologists at Ravello, Italy. The purpose of their meeting was to deliberate on the suggestions put forth by John Kendrew and Conrad Waddington on the creation of an institution and research facility dedicated to collaborative efforts in the field of molecular biology. Both plans received formal approval, and in July 1964, the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) was established.

During the Ravello summit, two primary objectives were set for EMBO: the construction of a central laboratory and the facilitation of networking activities to promote collaboration among scientists throughout Europe. In order to pursue these objectives, two committees were established. The endeavors of the Laboratory Committee resulted in the formation of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL).

The Federal Organization Committee had a significant role in driving the development of the EMBO Fellowship Programme and Courses & Workshops Programme. At the Ravello summit, Max Perutz was elected as the inaugural Chairman of EMBO, while John Kendrew was chosen as the Secretary General. Eduard Kellenberger’s efforts resulted in EMBO being granted official legal status on 12 July 1964.

The Volkswagen Foundation granted initial money for the organization, enabling EMBO to commence its first networking endeavors, which including fellowships, practical courses, and the selection of 140 biologists as the inaugural EMBO Members.

By establishing the European Molecular Biology Conference (EMBC) as a permanent intergovernmental organization in 1969, EMBO obtained the essential political backing for its enduring initiatives. The EMBC initially attracted the participation of fourteen nations, which ensured the organization’s financial stability and scientific autonomy.

Requirements for EMBO New Venture Fellowship:

• Applicants must possess a minimum of two years’ postdoctoral research experience and no more than two years’ experience as an independent group leader at the time of application. Additionally, they must be actively engaged in research.
• Projects must possess a biological importance and should enhance our understanding of a specific biological process.
• Applications should encourage cross-disciplinary study, with the proposed project diverging from the applicant’s existing area of focus.
• Applications should strive to establish novel partnerships.
• The fellowship necessitates the inclusion of a research project conducted at the host laboratory. Applications for consultations exclusively, or for participation in courses, workshops, or symposia, will not be taken into account.
• EMBO does not accept applications for the EMBO New Venture Fellowship if the purpose is to extend visits that have already started under different circumstances, or to serve as transitional fellowships before or between long-term stays financed by EMBO or other organizations.
• Applications for laboratory visits will only be approved if they are part of an ongoing partnership or if they involve past exchanges of scientists.
• The fellowships are granted for the purpose of facilitating exchanges between laboratories in EMBC Member States, Associated Member States, or Cooperation Partners.
• Exchanges between two laboratories located in the same nation are not eligible.

Obtaining an EMBO New Venture Fellowship is a straightforward process.

Prospective candidates are required to submit their applications exclusively through the EMBO application system, utilizing the online platform. Applications must contain the following:

• A cover letter is a document that accompanies a CV.
• Duplicates of pertinent diplomas and certificates
• A compilation of university courses along with corresponding grades, as well as a record of the master thesis and any publications, if applicable.
• Details of two individuals who can provide references
• Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
