Exciting Career Opportunity at Mars

ROLE: Cocoa Climate Sustainability Data Analyst

Mars has science-based targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (Scopes 1, 2, and 3) and reach net zero by 2050. Then, Mars’ net-zero goal depends on cocoa, its main category. Mars Cocoa Enterprise (MCE) is working toward this aim and integrating it into business processes. Better, open, and accessible greenhouse gas (GHG) data analytics should accompany this.

The Cocoa Climate Sustainability Data Analyst will help the worldwide team design, deploy, and generate MCE performance data analytics related to the climate agenda and other impact areas. This effort links our sustainability objectives to performance results, improving business decision-making, making data actionable for business leaders, and enabling lower-footprint innovation through improved processes and tools. This position evaluates complex sustainability data to improve MCE’s decision-making processes to meet Mars’ net zero goal.

The role includes global sustainability data analysis and reporting, farm-level polygon analysis and Mars system integration, impact factor methodology construction, and carbon footprint tool help. Also, the position requires technical expertise in geographic information systems (GIS), life cycle assessment with a focus on climate, quantitative data analysis and modeling, and systems integration. The ideal candidate is data-driven, flexible, critical, and able to collaborate across Mars teams, suppliers, and consultants.

What exactly are we looking for?

  • A degree in business, engineering, data science, or a field connected to sustainability is preferred.
  • Experience in a quantitative data analytic field or discipline with a focus on environmental sustainability, life cycle assessment, and GHG accounting is required.
  • Extensive knowledge of data analysis applications and systems (SimaPro, Excel, Power BI, Python, and so on).
  • Expertise in geographic information systems (GIS).
  • Technical expertise in sustainability areas such as GHG accounting and life cycle evaluation.
  • Understanding of GHG accounting standards and practices is required.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Moreover, data storytelling abilities
  • Flexibility in working with global teams across time zones.
  • Also, travel may be required on occasion.

What will your primary responsibilities be?

Analysis and reporting of data

Lead the analysis of data and the creation of scenarios for GHG accounting in MCE, using the whole life cycle view needed for Scope 3 accounting and applicable to MCE. Track MCE climate-specific and other related sustainability performance to meet mostly internal and occasionally external reporting requirements. This necessitates evaluating, integrating, and analyzing sustainability data from across continents in order to present a full picture of MCE climate sustainability development. This role will work with cross-functional stakeholders to identify data gaps or concerns in order to progress toward more simplified and precise climate sustainability data management.

Spatial Analysis at the Farm Level

Lead the analysis of farm-level geographic data and incorporate the results into Mars systems to lower and report greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation-free status, keeping an eye on climate-smart actions taken at the farm level, and correctly assigning emissions to cocoa. This includes, among other things, ensuring that the polygon data we get from our vendors is full and of good quality. This will be done in coordination with other functions and outside service providers.

Development and Validation of Impact Factors

Responsible for developing novel GHG impact factor approaches and contributing to the development of a library of archetypes for the generation of supplier- and origin-specific impact factors. These include developing cocoa-specific effect factors, taking into account varied origins and agricultural practices, as well as carbon sinks and sources such as above and below-ground carbon sequestration. This effort comprises digging down on Life Cycle Assessment assumptions for cocoa in the World Food LCA Database and improving the data by taking into account links between current supply chain data and overall impact factor calculations. This study will be done in partnership with the global sustainability team at Mars Inc., and the results will be used for internal and external reporting.

  • Support the development and implementation of a variety of tools critical to MCE’s ability to meet climate targets over time by informing and shaping choices and decisions, developing emissions scenarios, and expanding on current tools such as the Cool Farm Tool.
  • Making connections with other areas of impact
  • This role will also utilize existing and future capabilities to deliver on climate targets in additional impact areas, including land footprint, water stress, and even human rights targets.
