Environmental Justice Foundation Invites Job Applications

POSITION: Communications and Media Officer

Position Overview

This is a position for an ambitious, professional Communications and Media Officer with excellent copywriting and organizational abilities, a keen eye for a good story, and the ability to acquire media attention. As EJF’s Ghana Communications and Media Officer, you will collaborate with the Ghana Fisheries Programme Manager and our worldwide communications team to create and implement an ambitious communications and media strategy for EJF’s operations in Ghana.

Principal responsibilities:

  • Plan, design, and carry out agreed-upon communication strategy.
  • The Communications and Media Officer will develop press releases, social media content, homepage content, and other communications output such as pamphlets, banners, and posters in collaboration with the UK-based communications team and graphic designer.
  • Identify and engage target radio networks for radio programs, as well as assist local communities in connecting with radio journalists.
  • Develop a proactive network of engaged journalists to achieve major media coverage for EJF’s projects and to improve the overall quality of coverage of Ghana’s fishing industry.
  • Respond to media inquiries and collaborate with colleagues to maximize coverage chances.
  • Plan journalist training workshops.
  • Plan press excursions and accompanying communications materials.
  • Promote project films and radio shows to national media outlets as well as at local screening events.
  • Coordination of press conferences and tours to ensure the seamless operation of major events, including guest speakers and other high-profile supporters.
  • Ensure that all communications materials adhere to the donor branding guidelines.

Required Qualifications or Experience

Essential abilities and characteristics include the following:

  • Strong news judgment and the ability to communicate complicated information to a wide range of audiences, including local fishing communities
  • Capability to write motivating and fact-checked copy for print and online
  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in communications, media, journalism, public relations, or a related profession is required.
  • Working experience in a media/press team with in-depth knowledge of Ghana’s media landscape. Existing connections are advantageous.
  • A track record of completing projects with little oversight.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication abilities
  • Under pressure, she is tactful, polite, and calm.
  • Your attitude is confident, resilient, tenacious, and collaborative.
  • Concerned with environmental and human rights problems

Desirable abilities:

  • Working experience in television or radio media, including camera operation and conducting recorded interviews.
  • Previous experience working on environmental or fishery concerns is preferred.
