AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana) Limited’s Obuasi Gold Mine is almost done with the redevelopment phase, which will make it more modern, efficient, and long-term profitability. The underground mining operation is fully automated and is set up to mine an average of 5,000 t of ore per day.
We’re looking for self-starters with experience to join our team as SAFETY OFFICER – UNDERGROUND
ROLE PURPOSE AND CONTEXT
The person in this position is responsible for coordinating the health and safety program. The goal of this program is to promote safety and health and prevent injuries and property damage. This is done through proper and acceptable practices, training, implementation, and monitoring.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Find and fix unsafe work practices or conditions before they cause an accident. This can be done by inspecting the workplace regularly and promoting a safety-first mindset among the workers during visits.
- Do planned inspections and audits using a checklist on a regular basis to check if standards are being followed and to make sure all equipment is safe.
- Make sure that all of the legal requirements that have to do with health and safety at work are met.
- Do a formal risk assessment of the underground activities and make sure that all significant risks found in the risk assessment and from other sources, like audit reports, are recorded and that the right corrective actions are planned and carried out.
- Investigate the causes of all accidents and recommend and enforce the use of corrective measures to stop them from happening again.
- Make sure that the rules are followed when planned job observations and planned inspections are done on different types of workers and the underground plant infrastructure that they use. This will improve safe work practices.
- Increase the number of activities that follow the rules.
- Attend, take part in, and/or run safety meetings, such as Toolbox Meetings and Safety Committee Meetings.
- Train different types of workers on the job on a regular basis to make them more aware of safety and make sure they do their jobs in a safe way.
- Do technical work that supports the core functions and processes of the department in a way that requires a lot of independence.
- Give direction and help to create a single system for managing events, risks, reports, competencies, compliances, and procedures.
QUALIFICATION, EXPERIENCE, AND TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES
Qualification
- Must have a bachelor’s degree from a well-known school in mining engineering, mechanical engineering, physical sciences, or a similar field.
- Ghana Minerals Commission Health and Safety Certificate of Competence
- Must have worked underground for at least three years and be familiar with mining rules.
Skills that are technical
- Must understand General Safety rules and regulations well and be able to follow them, especially Underground Safety
- Very good skills with Microsoft Office programs
- Must be able to drive 4X4 vehicles with a manual transmission in rough terrains, such as underground.
- Experienced in helping with incident investigations for things that could be minor to major.
- Knowing how to look into accidents and having done it before
- ISO 45001-based auditing knowledge and experience
