Upon finishing their Master’s Program, Scholars will receive assistance in securing 4-6 month placements with prominent Africa-based organizations for their Ubuntu Period of Service. The Scholars will engage in initiatives in Africa, getting mentorship from prominent Africa-based academics and practitioners, thereby facilitating the Scholars’ development of pathways to significant careers in Africa.

The Scholars receive a customized Leadership and Impact Program along with personalized academic and social assistance during their studies. In addition to their academic pursuits, Scholars will become members of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program alumni and the AfOx Alumni Network, enabling them to engage with and contribute to the community of African Scholars associated with the University of Oxford and beyond.

Alongside peer support from the Scholar Community, Scholars benefit from mentorship and career assistance provided by AfOx Research and Innovation Fellows, as well as the extensive AfOx network of research leaders and entrepreneurs.

Criteria for Eligibility

Eligible offer holders will be automatically evaluated and notified by Student Fees and Funding through email. Qualified candidates will be requested to exhibit their compliance with the subsequent selection criteria. The commission evaluates four criteria while awarding the Scholarships:

  •  Scholarly merit and potential
  • Leadership experience and capacity enhancement
  • Conformity with AfOx principles and themes

Commitment to the development of Africa. To qualify for this grant, you must submit your graduate studies application by the applicable December/January deadline for your program.

To be eligible for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Oxford, submit your graduate studies application through the graduate admissions site by the primary December/January funding deadline for your selected course. Kindly review the Application Guide thoroughly before to submitting your application. We highly advise that you submit your application form and any supporting documentation at least one week before to December/January for your course.

Eligible candidates will then be invited to a virtual interview for the AfOx Graduate Scholarship Program.

Application Process

To submit an application for this fully-funded scholarship:

  • Submit your graduate application to the University of Oxford using the graduate admissions site before the designated deadline for your program.
  • Deadlines vary from November 15, 2024, to January 29, 2025, contingent upon your program.
  • Qualified candidates will be contacted by the Student Fees and Funding Office for a virtual interview regarding the AfOx Graduate Scholarship Program.
  • Successful candidates will be awarded scholarship offers by July 2025.

Schedule for the 2025/26 Admission

The majority of postgraduate programs at the University of Oxford have application deadlines in December or January, however not all do. The pertinent dates to acknowledge are:

  • 15 November 2024 – application deadline (certain courses)
  • December 3, 2024 – application deadline for the Medical Sciences Division and select other programs
  • January 7, 2025 — application deadline for Humanities courses
  • 8 January 2025 – application deadline for select Mathematical, Physical, and Life Sciences courses, as well as remaining Medical Sciences Division courses.
  • Deadline for applications: 9th January 2025 (Certain Social Sciences courses)
  • Deadline for applications: 28th January 2025 (Other Social Sciences courses)
  • 29 January 2025 – application deadline for Continuing Education courses, Law, and all other courses
  • February 2025 – April 2025 — Eligible candidates will get an email from Student Fees and Funding inviting them to an online AfOx scholarship interview via Zoom.
  • By July 2025, candidates will be notified of the results of their AfOx scholarship interview. Successful candidates will obtain a scholarship offer letter from Student Fees and Funding, along with an information bundle from AfOx detailing arrival procedures in Oxford and the induction program.
