Applications for NHS UK Bursary Scholarships 2025 Open is available for both international and domestic students. The scholarship permits enrollment in undergraduate and graduate programs in Medical Sciences, Dentistry, and Medicine offered by the National Health Service (NHS). The scholarship deadline is open.

The NHS Bursary is a financial assistance program for medical and dentistry students who mostly reside in England. This bursary targets students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate admission programs in medicine or dentistry. Qualified students may obtain a combination of non-means-tested and means-tested bursaries, tuition fee payments, and supplementary allowances contingent upon their circumstances.

Bursary not subject to means testing

  • The fee for the 2023 to 2024 academic year is £1,000 for all students.

Means-tested scholarship

The rates for 2023 to 2024 are as follows:

  • up to £3,191 if your university is located in London and you do not reside in your family home
  • Up to £2,643 if your university is located outside of London and you do not reside in your family house; up to £2,207 regardless of university location if you reside in your parental home.
  • The benefits you receive are contingent upon your status as either a dependent or independent student. Applicants seeking independent student status must provide evidence of their circumstances to substantiate their claim.
  • If you are dependent, we will determine your means-tested bursary amount based on your parents’ income, if they opt to disclose it.
  • If you are independent, we will assess it based on the income of your husband, partner, or civil partner, should they opt to disclose it.
  • Your income will be factored into the calculation of your means-tested bursary eligibility. We require information regarding any revenue you receive from:
  • pensions, bank or building society interest, rental income from property or lodgers, profits from dividends or shares, sponsorships, and specific taxable social security benefits
  • It is unnecessary to disclose any income derived from part-time or casual employment.

Tuition expenses

Upon the successful approval of your NHS Bursary application, we will remit a tuition fee contribution directly to your university.

The tuition fee contribution rates for the 2023 to 2024 academic year are as follows:

  • Up to £9,250 for a five or six-year undergraduate program; up to £3,715 for a three or four-year graduate entry program, increasing to £3,925 for English students enrolled in an approved degree in Northern Ireland.
  • Supplementary allowances
  • Your circumstances may qualify you for more support.

Supplementary provisions for the NHS Bursary include:

  • Dependents’ Allowance
  • Parental Learning Allowance (PLA)
  • Childcare Allowance (CCA)
  • Travel and Dual Accommodation Expenses (TDAE)
  • Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA)
  • Supplementary Weeks Compensation

Qualifications

You may qualify if you are pursuing a degree in medicine or dentistry and:

  • You are enrolled in an undergraduate program lasting 5 or 6 years, or a graduate entrance program lasting 3 or 4 years, within the Office for Students’ medical and dental student intake, and you have previously earned the NHS Bursary.
  • If you are pursuing a medical or dental degree as your second qualification, you may also qualify.

Residency

  • Eligibility for the NHS Bursary requires that you typically reside in England and be an English resident on the first day of your first academic year.
  • If you relocated to England from another part of the UK for your studies, you are ineligible.

Application procedures and timeline

  • Students enrolled in an undergraduate program of five years or longer may apply for the fifth and sixth years. A foundation year may be included if it was a fundamental component of your study.
  • If you are enrolled in a three-year graduate program, you may apply for the second and third years.
  • If you are enrolled in a four-year graduate program, you may apply for the second, third, and fourth years.
  • Years of your degree that you have repeated and are ineligible for the NHS Bursary do not qualify as qualifying years. If you repeat the second year of your undergraduate program, you may apply for the NHS Bursary starting in your fifth academic year, which is effectively your sixth year of study.
  • Should you require a repetition of a year eligible for the NHS scholarship, you may qualify for an additional scholarship of up to 12 months.
  • An intercalation year undertaken within the initial four years of your undergraduate program at either the bachelor’s or master’s level is considered a qualifying year. Intercalation years are not applicable at the PhD level.

Application Procedure

  • The application period for 2024 to 2025 is currently open. To apply, you must register for an NHS Bursary account or log into your existing account.
  • If you have previously received an NHS Bursary, you will receive an email encouraging you to apply for the 2024 to 2025 period.
  • We will distribute email invitations in batches to ensure the processing of all applications for the commencement of the school year.
  • Applications must be submitted within 9 months of the commencement of the school year for acceptance.

Payment dates for 2024 to 2025

Your NHS Bursary will be disbursed in three termly installments upon confirmation of your enrollment in the course by your university. Please log into your NHS Bursary account to obtain information regarding any funds you are entitled to receive.
