These competitive scholarships, worth either $5,000 or $10,000, are awarded to students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement. The scholarships cover the tuition expenses for one year of study.

The Tongarewa International Scholarships exemplify the University’s dedication to our global student community. Every year, we grant a variety of these scholarships to students from around the world. This scholarship is partially funded by fees and will cover the cost of tuition for one year of study. Applicants may be either commencing their initial year of an undergraduate degree or enrolling in a postgraduate degree program at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.

Scholarships are granted through a competitive process that takes into account academic merit. Applicants must apply for enrollment in the academic year immediately after their application, and the awarded credits will be deducted from their tuition expenses. Selected candidates may be asked to supply supplementary information to substantiate their application. Those who obtain these scholarships are assured an opportunity to stay in one of our Halls of Residence, as long as they submit an accommodation application to University Accommodation Wellington by the specified time.

The Victoria University of Wellington Tongarewa International Scholarships 2025 are open to students who wish to pursue Master’s and Postgraduate degrees at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand.

Eligible Nationalities

• This grant is available to students from any country.

Requirements for eligibility

• International Students: Applicants must be non-domestic students who are responsible for paying the complete international tuition expenses.
• New students must meet one of the following criteria:

• Commencing their inaugural year of an undergraduate degree program.
• Enrolling in a postgraduate degree program.

Disqualification:

• Applicants who finished their secondary education at a school in New Zealand are not qualified.
• English Language Programs: Students who have successfully finished the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) or Foundation Studies Program are disqualified.
• Individuals who are enrolled in Study Abroad or Twinning programs from foreign partner universities are not eligible.
• Continuing Students: Students who are beginning their second year of the same degree program at Victoria University of Wellington do not meet the eligibility criteria.

Process of selecting

• The applications will be reviewed by a selection panel comprised of suitable personnel from Wellington University International.

Procedure for Applying

As a component of your online application, please furnish the following:

• Please provide a personal statement of up to 500 words in which you articulate your reasons for wanting to study at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.
• Additionally, outline your academic objectives and present compelling reasons why you are deserving of the scholarship. Ensure that you provide specific information about any positions of authority you have held and your active participation in your educational institution or local community.
• Complete academic transcripts and any other pertinent paperwork corresponding to the type of qualification.
• A conditional or unconditional offer of admission from Victoria University of Wellington.

Rules and requirements

• The submission of a fully filled-out online application is required by 4:30 pm on the closing date. Applications that are submitted after the deadline or are missing required information will be rejected. In order for the application to be considered, all necessary supporting documents (including references) must be sent by 4:30 pm on the closing date.
• The Scholarship will only be granted if the beneficiary is enrolled in a full-year program that meets the qualifications and duration of the scholarship. The program must be considered full-time according to Studylink’s standards. The Scholarship payment will only be made once this criterion is fulfilled.
• It is not possible to postpone the Scholarship to a future year.
• The Scholarship can be combined with other rewards.
• If the winner decides to leave Victoria University of Wellington or does not make adequate progress while holding this scholarship, they will generally be required to partially repay the scholarship. Recipients are required to inform the Scholarships Office of their intention to withdraw.
• Recipients are required to serve as representatives for the Victoria University of Wellington and engage in relevant events or marketing activities upon request.
• The Deciding Authority has the authority to modify the terms and conditions of the Scholarship in unusual situations or to prevent hardship for any Scholarship candidate.
