Advantages of the Leiden University Excellence Scholarship:

The LExS scholarship provides full coverage for the whole study program and offers three different levels of awards.

  • A contribution of €10,000 to cover the cost of tuition.
  • A contribution of €15,000 will be provided to cover the cost of the tuition fee.
  • Includes the entire cost of tuition, except the mandatory tuition charge.

Nevertheless, it is crucial to acknowledge that the LExS does not encompass the complete tuition amount. Recipients originating from countries outside the European Economic Area (EEA) still need to present proof of sufficient money when applying for a student visa or residence permit.

The nationality requirements for the LExS (Leiden Excellence Scholarship) at Leiden University are clearly defined in the eligibility criteria.

  • Applicants who are not citizens of countries in the European Economic Area (EEA) or the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) must hold a passport from a country outside of these regions. The European Economic Area (EEA) comprises the member states of the European Union (EU) as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland.

Nevertheless, there is a provision for individuals who were already residing in the Netherlands and had their names included in the Dutch municipality’s BRP (Basisregistratie Personen) before January 1, 2021. These applicants may be ineligible for the LExS scholarship due to their residency status.

Requirements for Leiden University Excellence Scholarship:

Prerequisites for academic achievement

  • Applicants must have exhibited exceptional academic achievement in their prior educational programs that are pertinent to the Master’s degree they are seeking admission to. Typically, successful candidates are those who have achieved a position within the highest 10% of graduates from their previous study program. Documentation of ranking is unnecessary; this information is intended to emphasize the degree of competitiveness.

Duties

  • Recipients of the scholarship (LExS) must verify their approval of the Terms and Conditions linked to the scholarship. Before the scholarship being granted, this acknowledgement must be given in the written form.

Exceptions

Applicants are disqualified from the scholarship based on the following criteria:

  • Applicants who have already obtained a Master’s degree from Leiden University, unless there are unique conditions that need a previous Master’s program or work experience (e.g., LLM Advanced Studies programs).
  • Individuals who are seeking to enroll in either the LLM (non-advanced) or MSc program at Leiden Law School.
  • Students who are registering for programs that start in February at the Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Sciences, or Leiden Law School.
  • Individuals who do not fulfill the mentioned nationality criteria are not eligible for the scholarship.
  • Additionally, it is not possible to combine the LExS with a complete scholarship from an external supplier. Recipients are required to notify the scholarships department if they obtain complete external financing. Nevertheless, in specific circumstances, the LExS could be amalgamated with a partial scholarship obtained from an external entity. Procedure for Applying for the Leiden University Excellence Scholarship:

Admission Application:

  • Submit your application online to enroll in the Master’s program at Leiden University.
  • Make careful to submit the application well in advance of the LExS deadline, as it may require up to 2 days to complete and submit the application.
  • Remit the application fee if it is required.

Determining eligibility for the LExS program:

  • Upon completing the submission of your admission application, return to the Apply screen of your online application and go to the Scholarships section.
  • If you meet the requirements for the LExS, it will be displayed in the scholarships area.
  • If the LExS is not visible, it could be because of an incomplete admission application or ineligibility for the scholarship.

Application for the LExS program:

  • Declare your desire to apply the LExS.
  • Submit a PDF document (maximum 500 words) that includes your LExS motivation letter. This correspondence aims to elucidate the reasons why your candidacy should be duly regarded for the prestigious accolade.

Submission and modifications:

  • Ensure that you submit your scholarship application before the deadline for the LExS program.

Multiple Program Applications:

  • To apply for numerous study programs/specializations and request an LExS for each, you must submit a distinct LExS application and motivation letter for each program.

Delayed Submissions:

  • Applications submitted after the deadline will not be taken into consideration for the scholarship.
  • The student is responsible for submitting both the entrance application and the scholarship application before the LExS deadline.

Process of selecting.

  • The faculty selection committees will suggest beneficiaries of the LExS scholarship during a period of 6 weeks after the LExS deadline.
  • Every applicant will be sent an email informing them of the outcome of their LExS application:
  • By the conclusion of November (for programs commencing in February)
  • Deadline: April 30th (for programs commencing in September)
