Dr. Sandra Kirby established the Linda Brown and Vana Kirby Scholarship 2024, Graduate Level, to honor and support both her sisters and graduate students at the University of Winnipeg in Canada.
The purpose of this scholarship program is to alleviate financial burdens for students, particularly those with impairments. The recipients will receive around $1,000 to participate in additional academic and scientific endeavors. This award acknowledges the commitment of families towards supporting the progress of graduate students and promotes both outstanding academic performance and community engagement among graduate students.
The University of Winnipeg
The University of Winnipeg is a vibrant campus located in the downtown area, serving as a central meeting place for individuals from all cultural backgrounds and fostering the development of global-minded individuals.
Our institution provides exceptional undergraduate and graduate programs, some of which are exclusive to Western Canada. Notably, we offer a Bachelor of Arts in Human Rights and a Master’s degree in Development Practice with a specialization in Indigenous Development. Due to the university’s reputation for small class sizes, academic excellence, and dedication to Indigenous inclusion, our graduates highly value their educational experience at UWinnipeg.
Historical background of the University of Winnipeg
The University of Winnipeg was granted its charter in 1967, although its origins may be traced back over 145 years. The initial institutions were Manitoba College (1871) and Wesley College (1888), which amalgamated in 1938 to establish United College. We celebrated the 50th anniversary of receiving our university charter in 2017, which former Manitoba Premier Duff Roblin supported.
The University of Winnipeg is situated on Treaty One property, in the center of the Métis homeland. It provides a compact and diverse academic community that is multicultural and dedicated to promoting access and excellence. The University of Winnipeg is a post-secondary university that receives funding from both the provincial government and private sources. It offers undergraduate and select graduate degrees, as well as Collegiate and continuing education departments.
The University of Winnipeg offers a wide range of courses, with over 800 options available in more than 40 subject areas, including Indigenous Governance and Women’s Studies. Despite its extensive course offerings, the university maintains a small size that allows students to establish meaningful connections with its highly regarded teachers.
Additionally, we provide postgraduate programs in the fields of arts, science, and business. UWinnipeg has a student population of over 9,300, consisting of both full-time and part-time students. We take pride in the fact that our student body is representative of the diversity in our region. Specifically, 13% of our new students identify themselves as First Nations, Métis, and Inuit, while an additional 22% describe themselves as belonging to a racialized community.
From 2005 to 2015, the University of Winnipeg implemented a ten-year revitalization plan that resulted in $217 million of additional investments being made in the campus and the surrounding community. The core focus of the strategy revolved around the University’s dedication to offering students an environmentally conscious and pertinent learning atmosphere, while also collaborating with the local community in terms of resources and physical space.
