Regarding Makerere University
Founded in 1922 as a modest technical institution, Makerere University is one of the oldest and most esteemed English universities in Africa. In January of that year, Uganda Technical College, formerly known as the school, commenced operations, admitting 14-day students who enrolled in Carpentry, Building, and Mechanics courses.
The College has expanded its educational offerings to include disciplines such as Medical Care, Agriculture, Veterinary Sciences, and Teacher Training. In 1935, it saw significant growth and transformation, evolving into a prominent institution for higher education in East Africa. Also, in 1937, the College began its transformation into a higher education institution by introducing post-school credential programs.
In 1949, it was established as a University College that was associated with the University College of London. It provided courses that led to the general degrees offered by its parent university at the time.
On June 29, 1963, the University of East Africa was founded, marking the end of its unique affiliation with the University of London and the introduction of its degree programs.
Makerere University gained independence as a national university of the Republic of Uganda on July 1, 1970. It started offering both undergraduate and postgraduate programs that led to its academic qualifications. Makerere University provides day, evening, and external study programs to around 35,000 undergraduate and 3,000 postgraduate students, including both Ugandan and foreign students. Additionally, it serves as a very dynamic hub for research.
On July 1, 2011, the University changed its organizational structure from being based on faculties to a collegiate system. By December 30, 2011, Makerere University officially became a Collegiate University with 9 Constituent Colleges. As of July 1, 2014, there were 10 Constituent Colleges, including the School of Law, all functioning as semi-autonomous units of the University.
