About The University of Hong Kong

The University of Hong Kong, commonly referred to as HKU, is the oldest higher education institution in Hong Kong. Sir Frederick Lugard, the Governor of Hong Kong at the time, laid the foundation stone for the University on March 16, 1910.

The University was initially established in Hong Kong as an autonomous institution of academics by the University Ordinance on March 30, 1911.

The University was inaugurated on March 11, 1912, with the establishment of its initial Faculties: Arts, Engineering, and Medicine. The Faculty of Medicine originated from the Hong Kong College of Medicine, established in 1887. Among the early graduates of the College, Dr. Sun Yat-sen stands out as the most esteemed, widely recognized as the architect of contemporary China.

In December 1916, the University conducted its inaugural congregation, which included a modest number of 23 graduates.

Women students were initially accepted to HKU ten years after its establishment.

Queen Mary Hospital was established in 1937 and has functioned as the University’s teaching hospital ever since. Before the onset of the Second World War, which caused a cessation of academic pursuits, there were four faculties at the institution: Arts, Engineering, Medicine, and Science.

Following the year 1945, the University experienced significant changes in its structure as attempts to rebuild after the war began in earnest.
