The inaugural cohort of three ODI Fellows commenced their assignments in 1963. Since then, more than 1,300 fellows have collaborated with over 50 public sector institutions worldwide.

Fellowships are generally decided based on the requirements of the scheme’s partners. The ongoing need from governments for ODI Fellows, along with the significant amount of responsibility bestowed upon them, is evidence of the high regard the program has garnered in the 60 years since its inception.

The ODI Fellowship Scheme welcomes candidates of all nationalities and actively promotes and supports applications from LGBTQ+ and disabled people. Applications are welcome from economists and statisticians who have completed their postgraduate studies and have a specific interest in development.

The ODI Fellowship Scheme receives generous support from various organizations, including the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO), the United Kingdom’s Office of National Statistics (ONS), the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Namibia Nature Foundation (NNF), the EdTech Hub, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the Global Fund, the Government of Timor Leste, the World Health Organization (WHO), and Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).
