About  Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung is an organization that is focused on promoting social democracy, political education, and international cooperation.

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) is the oldest political foundation in Germany, established in 1925, and has a long-standing history in social democracy. The establishment and purpose of the foundation can be attributed to the political heritage of Friedrich Ebert, the first democratically elected President of Germany.

Our political foundation’s activity centers around the fundamental principles and beliefs of social democracy, which include freedom, justice, and solidarity. This establishes a connection between us and the principles of social democracy and free trade unions. As a non-profit institution, we conduct our work with autonomy and independence.

Our objectives

We advocate for

  • A society that is free and founded on the principles of solidarity, providing equal chances for all its citizens to engage in political, economic, social, and cultural activities, irrespective of their background, gender, or religion.
  • A robust and vibrant democracy; sustained economic growth with equitable employment opportunities for all;
  • A welfare state that offers enhanced educational opportunities and improved healthcare, while simultaneously addressing poverty and safeguarding individuals against life’s adversities.
  • A nation that assumes the role of promoting peace and social advancement in Europe and globally.

Our activities

We bolster and enhance social democracy primarily through:

  • Engaging in political educational initiatives aimed at enhancing the resilience of civil society. Our political education programs in Germany aim to inspire, empower, educate, and equip citizens with the necessary skills to effectively participate in political, trade union, and civil activities. We enhance the engagement of individuals in social discourse and the processes of making decisions.
  • Our think tanks focus on formulating solutions about fundamental matters such as economic, social, and educational policies, as well as concerns that promote democracy. We foster a public dialogue among think tanks, academics, and political practitioners to promote a fair and sustainable economic and social system at the national, European, and global levels.
  • International cooperation: Through our extensive global presence in over 100 countries, we actively advocate for peaceful collaboration and the protection of human rights. We strive to foster the development and stability of democratic, social, and constitutional systems, while also championing the rights of trade unions and the empowerment of civil society. We actively support the promotion of a socially inclusive, democratic, and economically competitive Europe in the process of European integration. Assistance is provided through scholarship programs to exceptionally gifted young individuals, specifically targeting students and Ph.D. candidates who originate from low-income homes or have a migratory background. This is our endeavor to enhance educational democracy.
  • Our archive, library, and contemporary history programs preserve the historical origins of social democracy and trade unions, serving as a resource for sociopolitical and historical research, and ensuring the continuity of communal memory.
