Concerning the University of Michigan Flint

In a letter written in 1837, Ann Arbor resident Sarah C. Miles Case said, “A branch of Michigan University at Ann Arbor is to be established in Flint at some future day.” Her family was back east.

That day was September 23, 1956—nearly 120 years after Sarah wrote the first-ever account of a University of Michigan-Flint campus. Dean David French led the college as it welcomed 167 students on their first day of classes at Flint Senior College, which was founded on the site of today’s Mott Community College.

The school has continued to grow and change in response to the needs of the community it was founded to serve because of the vision, generosity, and leadership of local and state leaders like Charles Stewart Mott, Governor George Romney, and other leaders in Flint and Ann Arbor.

Naming Of The University

In 1970, the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools accredited Flint College. The University of Michigan-Flint was the official name of the institution until 1971 when the U-M Board of Regents changed it. William E. Moran became the first Chancellor of the University of Michigan-Flint in that same year, following the appointment of University of Michigan President Robben Fleming.

The University of Michigan at Flint started relocating to a site in the center of downtown Flint in the late 1970s. They constructed a riverfront campus with a few buildings, such as the Recreation Center, the Harding Mott University Center, and the Classroom Office Building, which UM-Flint alumni called CROB.

In 1988, the Murchie Science Building opened in response to an increase in student enrollment, and in 2021, a new wing dedicated to expanding STEM courses debuted. The remarkable Thompson Library was constructed in 1994 thanks to a donation from donor Frances Willson Thompson. Me

The William S. White Building, which includes health classrooms and labs, opened in 2001, marking UM-Flint’s first northward expansion. Today, the campus is welcoming and modern, covering over 70 acres along the Flint River.
