Concerning the University of Montreal

The University of Montreal is a prestigious research university with a strong Montreal foundation and a strong commitment to its global purpose.

One of the biggest university complexes in North America is the University of Montreal, which is connected to Polytechnique Montréal (engineering) and HEC Montréal (business).

The University of Montreal is Canada’s fourth-largest research university, drawing in about $680 million in funding each year.

Also, the University of Montreal gave birth to several famous labs, such as the Institute for Research in Immunology and Cancer (IRIC), one of the most productive in the field, the Centre de recherche en droit public (CRDP), the most extensive public-law research center in Canada; and MILA, the premier university research center in the world for deep learning.

The University of Montreal is home to 2,300 professors and researchers, in addition to 67,000 students throughout its 13 colleges and affiliated schools. Among its many notable alumni are the late Pierre Elliott Trudeau, one of Canada’s most well-known prime ministers; Roger Guillemin, co-recipient of the 1977 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine; Louise Arbour, a former chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda; Joanne Liu, the international president of Doctors Without Borders; and many others.

Located on the northwest slope of Mount Royal, one of the best urban parks in North America, the University of Montreal honors the hospitable, multicultural city it was named for. At the University of Montreal, one in four students is international. Montreal is renowned for its cheap cost of living, safety, and vibrant culture.

Why Study At the University of Montreal?

1. Affordable university costs

Canada offers a relatively inexpensive university education when compared to many other nations. International students can find some of the lowest tuition costs in North America in Quebec. When it comes to higher education, studying in Quebec is typically less expensive than studying in other parts of Canada or the United States (see Éducation et Enseignement supérieur, Gouvernement du Québec, The Benefits of Studying in Quebec).

2. A committed, eco-responsible city

There is still fresh air in Montreal, despite it being a large, busy city! Bicycle trails, lush alleyways, and woodland parks are scattered across the city. In fact, by planting trees and expanding its green spaces, the city hopes to drastically cut its greenhouse gas emissions and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Furthermore, the majority of Montrealers recycle and compost as a way to help the environment.

3. Culture at the heart of urban life

Montreal’s past, present, and future are harmoniously blended. Walking about the city is a visual delight because old and new buildings are often nestled next to one another. There is enough for art enthusiasts to do, including bright museums, murals, libraries, and festivals!

4. A world leader in artificial intelligence

Unbeknownst to you, artificial intelligence (AI) research is centered in Montreal. This is partly attributable to the efforts of Yoshua Bengio, a professor at the Université de Montréal who founded the Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms (MILA) and is a pioneer in the field of deep learning. The AI industry in Montreal has attracted significant investors, including Google and Microsoft (investquebec.com).

5. A huge year-round playground

In Montreal, there is never a moment to be bored! Pop-up art installations, concerts, and festivals (musical, circus, and culinary) draw both locals and visitors throughout the year.

It’s difficult not to fall in love with Montreal with all that the city has to offer! We do know that once you experience city life, it’s difficult to leave. Will Montreal win you over and become your go-to study location?
