About Presbyterian University

The Presbyterian Church of Ghana founded Ghana’s first primary school in 1843. This led to bold, visionary, and pioneering education reforms in the country. The Presbyterian Training College (PTC) at Akropong, West Africa’s second higher education institution after Fourah Bay College in Sierra Leone, opened five years later. Since those early days, the Presbyterian Church of Ghana has founded and operated hundreds of primary schools, high schools, and colleges in conjunction with the government.

Presbyterian education has high moral and educational standards, which these schools and universities follow. The church has operated Professional, Technical, and Vocational Institutions in agriculture, health, and other disciplines with government support. The church has 1,886 schools, including 490 Nurseries, 973 Primary Schools, 388 Junior High Schools, five Vocational Institutes, five Colleges of Education, and 25 Senior High Schools.

It was envisioned that the Presbyterian Training College (PTC) would become a university like Fourah Bay College in Sierra Leone. After several years, the Presbyterian Church of Ghana Synod boldly decided to construct a university in 1996. The Presbyterian University Implementation Committee was founded in 1998 to advance this plan. These efforts and the Church’s determination created Presbyterian University, Ghana.
