JOB TITLE: Respiratory Therapist

Between 2013 and 2019, PATH collaborated with the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), Ghana Health Service and Kybele Inc. to implement the Making Every Baby Count Initiative (MEBCI). The goal of the project was “by 2018, 90% of newborns born in health facilities in target regions will receive essential newborn care and appropriate interventions to address asphyxia, infection, and prematurity according to the government guidelines”. We implemented this project in the then Brong Ahafo Region (now Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo Regions), the then Volta Region (now Volta and Oti Regions), the Eastern and Ashanti Regions.

The goal of this project is to provide advanced care to sick and small newborns. The MEBCI 2.0 project is being implemented in four regional-level health facilities – Ridge Hospital, Tema General Hospital, Koforidua, and Sunyani Regional Hospital – where sick and small babies can receive advanced care. The objectives are:

  1. To build advanced clinical care and operational processes in four regional hospitals to care for small and sick newborns.
  2. To improve staffing, equipment, supplies to support the provision of advanced clinical care.
  3. To establish multilayered data systems at the regional hospitals to measure clinical and operational processes and impact.
  4. To advocate for policy and internationally accepted standards for advanced newborn care.

PATH is seeking qualified and motivated Respiratory Therapist for the Making Every Baby Count Initiative (MEBCI) Project.

Responsibilities:

Primary duties of these individuals will be to ensure the following:

  • Administers and assesses responses to respiratory interventions with high proficiency (placing babies on CPAP, providing oxygen therapy, bronchodilator therapy etc.)
  • Evaluates effects of respiratory therapy treatment plan by observing, noting, and evaluating patients progress and recommends adjustments and modifications.
  • Establishes and manages mechanical ventilation, CPAP and supplemental oxygen, and routinely develops or refines ventilator or CPAP care plan and communicates this with the patient care team based on evidence and best practice.
  • Responds to all high-risk deliveries that need respiratory assistance, together with the Designated Assessment and Resuscitation Team (DART) because they (Respiratory therapist) are an integral member of the multidisciplinary care and DART team.
  • Participates and assists during resuscitation and intubation
  • Participates during inter and intra hospital transport of the neonates and children on respiratory support
  • Performs timely and accurate documentation
  • Participates in continuous quality improvement activities
  • Supports nursing and medical staff in the patient interface with these machines
  • Be accredited and participates in Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) training of the staff
  • Conduct on-site, post Kybele refresher trainings on neonatal resuscitation to health care providers
  • Be clinical liaisons to the PATH Ghana office.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Experience

  • To begin with, Must have completed an accredited respiratory therapy training program and have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree of Science in Respiratory Therapy
  • Then, Must be able to read, write, speak, and communicate in English to successfully accomplish the essential duties of the position
  • Moreover, Must be able to comprehend and follow the policies and procedures of all the referral -level MEBCI-affiliated facilities
  • Furthermore, Must be able to demonstrate ethical behavior that supports the PATH and the referral-level hospital’s mission, values, and commitment to compliance with all national and regional regulatory laws.
  • Additionally, Preferably should be knowledgeable about Ghana Health Services quality improvement policies and hospital operations, and if not, be prepared to learn quickly and conscientiously these.
  • Also, Must inspire trust and exhibit honesty and integrity within the scope of daily activities.
  • More so, Must exhibit professionalism, courtesy, and excellent customer service, while interacting with patients, co-workers, and MEBCI-Partners.
  • Thereafter, Must be able to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • Besides that, Must have a strong desire to partake in research and continuous quality improvement activities
  • Most importantly, Must be able to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Afterwards, Must be able to perform, run and interpret arterial and capillary blood gases
  • Last but not least, Must be able to perform level maintenance on MEBCI-respiratory and other, related equipment.
  • Finally, Must be able to evaluate diagnostic testing.
