ROLE: Senior Journalist, BBC News – Pidgin Service
The BBC World Service is still the most popular foreign broadcaster in Africa. It reaches more than 100 million people every week through all media platforms and social media.
The BBC contacts 320 million people around the world every week through different platforms. Pidgin, Yoruba, and Igbo are three of the language services that help people in Nigeria and West Africa. They are based in Lagos and work with our team in Abuja, which is where the BBC’s Hausa service is currently made. A lot of effort is put into reaching and bonding with young people. We need a Senior Journalist to join our team in Accra.
Main Responsibilities
The BBC is looking for a great Senior Journalist Reporter who can make digital, radio, and video content that young people will like.
You will provide timely, rich, expert, and authoritative coverage (live and pre-recorded) for the BBC Pidgin Service, BBC Africa, and the rest of the BBC through digital and social media channels. To make and share high-quality, informative, and creative material and reports for all BBC Pidgin outlets, including online, audio/video, and social media. Among other responsibilities include;
- Most of the Pidgin output for online and social media should come from unique sources, and content should be shared as much as possible.
- Come up with unique content ideas and be able to carry them out.
- Report and post live news as it happens on as many sites as needed
- Manage, teach, and help BBC Pidgin staff who are just starting out.
Requirements
Are you the right person for the job
- Pidgin as a first language (or something similar) must be known well and up to speed. It would be nice to know Hausa, Yoruba, or Igbo as well.
- Excellent English skills, including the ability to understand written and spoken English, are important for journalism, as is the ability to interact well.
- A background in digital media and social media news is a plus, and you should have a strong screen presence for online and social media coverage.
- A good voice and presence for broadcasting and the ability to learn the right style of presentation to connect well with listeners in both Pidgin and English
- Experience reporting on political, economic, and social problems from the ground in Ghana is a plus. Also important for an interview is being able to show that you have a wide range of contacts.
- Up-to-date, in-depth understanding of Ghanaian and West African affairs, including social issues. It will be helpful if you know a lot about what is going on in the wider area or the world.
- It is important to have a good understanding of the needs of a young, tech-savvy audience in the area.
- Ability to share ideas for stories and shows in an interesting way and to take part fully in planning.
- Know how to use modern broadcasting and recording (audio and video) equipment, including digital, and be good at it.
- A record of working well with other people and an understanding of how important it is to work as part of a team, especially from far away, as well as on your own.
- Ability to stay calm under pressure set reasonable goals for work, and work at a steady pace.
