We have a special aptitude for clarifying futures. Our main goal is to help people transform their passions into careers by providing them with top-notch curricula, adaptable academic programs, and exploratory education.

In close collaboration with academic staff and teachers, you will design a personalized academic program that will allow you to pursue your interests, choose the appropriate majors, and start a fulfilling career.

Concerning Lycoming College

Lycoming College is approaching its 300th anniversary. The liberal arts and sciences have constituted the core of its curriculum since its founding as the Williamsport Academy in 1812. The study of “English and other languages” and “the useful arts, sciences, and literature” was outlined as the primary educational goal in the Charter. English, writing, arithmetic, geography, chemistry, natural philosophy, mathematics, Latin, and Greek were all covered in the curriculum in 1841.

When the Academy couldn’t survive financially in the early 1840s, a group of Methodists under the direction of the Rev. Benjamin Crever bought it and renamed it the Williamsport Dickinson Seminary. Schools with more advanced coursework were referred to as “seminaries,” and many of the alumni of seminaries enrolled as juniors in four-year universities.

The main elements of the Academy curriculum were still included in the curriculum. Under President Edward J. Gray’s direction, the study of music and art drew so many students in the late 19th century that the Seminary built Bradley Hall as a new building specifically for these two subjects.

Under President John W. Long’s direction, the seminary flourished in the early 20th century and grew during the 1920s. It changed its name to Williamsport Dickinson Seminary and Junior College in 1929 and became Pennsylvania’s first junior college to be private. The seminary offered advanced study, mostly in the liberal arts and sciences, which was institutionalized in the Junior College curriculum.

Because its leaders have stuck to the tradition set by its founders—that the best preparation a person can have for a happy and successful life is time spent studying the liberal arts and sciences—Lycoming College enjoys its current status as a national liberal arts and sciences college.
