About This Position

To assist the Social Responsibility Manager in developing and implementing Newmont’s Ahafo South Mine social performance initiatives and activities and to foster positive connections with host and neighboring communities and other stakeholders.

Maintain Productive Relationships

  • Develop favorable stakeholder relationships.
  • Build stakeholder trust in the company.

Managing Stakeholders

  • Invite communities to discuss issues, concerns, and expectations constructively and productively with minimal operational disturbance.
  • To maintain open communication, engage kids.
  • Communicate with local, regional, and traditional authorities to meet community relations needs.
  • Accept community stakeholder invitations and attend productive diagnostic meetings.
  • Encourage youth, assemblymen, and farmers to support mine-related activities.
  • Maintain cooperative ties with community stakeholders and local NGOs/CBOs to ensure community program success.
  • Assess the fenceline community impacts of Ahafo South operation and exploration and make efforts to mitigate impacts and improve stakeholder relations.

Social Performance and Standardization

  • Work with the Newmont Community Development Unit, the Ahafo Social Responsibility Forum, and local leaders to implement the Ahafo Social Responsibility Relationship, Foundation, and Local Employment Agreements Commitments.
  • Help the Security Department identify unlawful mining hazards to Newmont operations and exploration and remove mine-take activities responsibly.
  • Work with relevant internal and external parties to create alternative livelihood initiatives for illegal small-scale miners who want to leave.
  • Work with HR and Supply Chain to implement and report the Ahafo Local Employment Agreement.
  • Support Newmont Cultural Heritage, Human Rights, Local Procurement, Local Employment, and Stakeholder Relationship Management Standards implementation and reporting.
  • Promote openness and confidence in local recruitment by representing Newmont in Business Partners recruitment procedures and reporting results to Human Resources and Social Performance.

Land Access, Resettlement

  • Implement community entrance tactics to secure land access for near-mine and off-site prospecting license exploration.
  • Help the Land Access Unit arrange project-affected resettlement.

The Implementation and Monitoring

  • Execute and monitor community relations initiatives, including a constant assessment of community perceptions and expectations of the company, and report findings to management to guide site adaptation plans and practices.
  • Maintain program, policy, and process consistency to meet Newmont business goals and community acceptance.
  • Identify ways to improve Newmont-community stakeholder ties.

Manage Conflict

  • Help the Complaints and Grievance Unit create and implement dispute resolution techniques.
  • Establish an early warning system in all operational and exploration communities to anticipate conflict.
  • Intervene in issues between the Company and local communities, especially fenceline communities.
  • Dual conversations with the community and Newmont Senior Management can help resolve such disputes.

Sustainability Reporting and Team Leadership

  • Manage the Community Relations unit in the Sustainability department’s Social Responsibility section and advise the corporation on Ahafo South Mine community management.
  • Lead and coordinate Community Relations Officers and guide and train Community Relations teams to implement best practices.
  • Encourage internal community relations data gathering and analysis for Newmont Sustainability reporting.
  • Help Regulators and Corporate Office compile monthly and annual KPI reports.

Health, Safety, Environment

  • Quality Safety Inspections, Audits, and Risk & Impact Assessments will help Ahafo South Mine avoid fatalities, injuries, and illnesses.
  • Add controls to reduce risk.
  • Learn and follow Newmont’s Health, Safety, Environmental, and Sustainability
  • Standards. Be a role model and advocate for these standards and behaviors.

Training, Skills, and Experience Checklist

Professional registrations and formal qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, social work, sociology, public relations, communications, social risk management, anthropology, or comparable field.

Extra Knowledge

  • Knowledge of Ahafo languages spoken in the mining villages.
  • Deep understanding of Ahafo customs.
  • Class C driver’s license.
  • Pre-existing local contacts or networks can benefit the company.

Experience

  • Must have 5 years of relevant Community Relations, Community Development, Social Performance, Public Affairs, or Stakeholder Engagement experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of supervised experience.
  • Mining experience is valuable.

Technical Skills

  • Successfully managed community relations, especially in mining.
  • Skills in community interactions, cross-functional teamwork, and business partner management.
  • Advanced social abilities (working with other cultures and functions).
  • Strong knowledge of Ghanaian culture, customs, languages, and regulations.
  • Ability to operate individually and in a team with a strong ethical and sustainable focus.
