Job Opening at Aya Institute for Women, Politics, and Media

Aya Institute for Women, Politics, and Media is in need of a Research and Policy Lead (RPL) to help us put our research interests into action in a way that is technically sound. The RPL will be in charge of the creation of new research projects and will help improve Aya’s research and policy portfolio.

Over the years, we’ve done interesting research on Gender in Governance/Politics, Media, and Trade. Now, we need a subject-matter researcher to join the team.

Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Review the Institute’s current research projects and make suggestions to the board of directors about how to keep going.
  • A creative mind to find new research areas and build our portfolio of research and advocacy
  • Do research that will help shape policy in line with the organization’s goal of achieving gender equality.
  • Find, hire, and manage new people in the RPL department
  • Make plans for research projects and give advice to the board of directors.
  • Create partnerships with other research groups that people trust.

Communication and Advocacy

  • Must be able to explain both simple and complicated research results to a wide range of people at all levels.
  • Engage with academics, policymakers, and other relevant stakeholders in all of our research projects
  • Find local and international organizations that are interested in research and want to work together on it.
  • Come up with creative ways to share all of our research with the right people.

Financial Management

  • Provide a full budget for all research activities and give it to the board of directors so they can think about it.
  • Oversee how money is given and spent on research activities in line with the Aya Institute’s policy for financial management.

Skills or Experience Needed

  • At least an MPhil or Ph.D. in Gender Studies, Media and Communication Studies, Political Science, International Development, or International Relations, or equivalent experience.
  • You must be a researcher or academic (even if you just got your Ph.D., that’s fine) with research experience in Gender and any of the other themes of interest that overlap with it.
  • Knowledge of the workings of a large number of local and international research organizations
  • Being good at analyzing data
  • Should be able to run several research projects at the same time.
  • Must always act with a high level of professionalism.
  • Able to work on large-scale research projects and outreach programs, especially when it comes to translating and sharing research with policymakers and practitioners.
  • Excellent written, spoken, and in-person presentation and communication skills.
  • Able to work both on their own and as part of a team
  • Integrity, credibility, and a strong commitment to the goal of gender equality are important personal traits.
