Job Title: Associate Research Manager
IPA Ghana, which has offices in Accra and Tamale, has been in operation since 2009. Over 60 studies have been carried out, including foundational research on differentiated education, agricultural insurance, and the Graduation Approach. IPA Ghana has robust internal control systems, high-quality data collecting, and long-serving and highly experienced employees. Our staff size ranges from 30 to 55 people.
The Associate Research Manager will be in charge of the overall management of a portfolio of 2-4 research projects, the majority of which will be in the education, public health, Social Protection, financial inclusion, or agriculture sectors, and will include large-scale surveys in multiple Ghanaian regions. Each of these initiatives is intended to have a regular team of 1 to 4 employees and up to 30-100 temporary employees during survey times.
Responsibilities
The Associate Research Manager will be in charge of overseeing all research projects. In particular, as part of the position’s research component, the ARPDM will:
- Work with Principal Investigators to ensure that research design, sample selection, data collecting, data administration, and general research methods, as well as overall project objectives and schedules, are followed.
- Directly supervise permanent research project staff while keeping an eye on their professional development.
- Coach, manage, and support a team of Research Associates and Field Managers in the nationwide implementation of complicated impact evaluations.
- Keep the Country Director up to date on all developments on the projects in their portfolio, and act as a liaison between the field office, project employees, and Principal Investigators.
- Ensure research quality guidelines are followed, encourage inter-project best practices, and take the lead in sharing best practices with projects through formal and informal training.
- Work with field office personnel to achieve effective human resource and project management.
- Oversee project financial management, including project budget formulation and monitoring, as well as project integration into IPA financial systems.
- Participate in regular meetings with local government officials and other partners to guarantee program success; and
- Support the distribution of interim results to non-academic audiences through presentations and reports.
Qualifications Required
- A master’s degree (or its equivalent) in economics, political science, international development, public policy, or a related discipline is required.
- At least three years of experience in a comparable role;
- Outstanding project management abilities;
- Previous project management experience and a solid understanding of research methodology, particularly quantitative data management;
- Experience establishing research projects, budgeting, and project planning;
- Previous fundraising experience with both public and private donors;
- Experience in research and policy involvement is required.
- A strong desire to connect rigorous impact evaluation research to policymakers and practitioners, as well as communicate what works in development;
- Experience managing funds and contracts, preferably in a research setting;
- Excellent managerial and organizational abilities, as well as the capacity to work autonomously;
- Advanced English communication and presenting skills.
Preferred
- Stata proficiency
- Working experience in Sub-Saharan Africa
- Excel macros and SurveyCTO programming skills are required.
