The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), an independent UN organization, conducts independent research on disarmament and related subjects, particularly those pertaining to international security.

UNIDIR envisions a world free from the threat of armed conflict, where people and states live in stability and security. UNIDIR’s mission is to assist policy and research communities, as well as Member States, the UN, and other organizations, in promoting ideas and initiatives that lead to a more sustainable and peaceful global community. Geneva’s Palais des Nations is home to UNIDIR.

The UNIDIR Space Security Program increases understanding of the difficulties and implications for international security that are unique to the space domain. Our work strengthens international capability and trust and provides insights to multilateral processes that are addressing the intricate issues and technologies at stake in this significant domain.

The graduate professional or their supporting institutions bear the obligation for all travel, visa, lodging, and living expenses.

As a contribution to living expenses, a stipend (USD 1210/month, Geneva-based) is provided. Stipends for successful candidates who currently get funding from another source—like an educational institution—will be increased by this sum.

Specifics of the internship:

  • Title of Position: Professional Graduate (Space Security Program)
  • Commencing in March of 2024
  • A 100% OCCUPATION RATE
  • DURATION: six months, with an extension perhaps
  • RENUMERATION: A monthly stipend of USD 1210, based in Geneva, is provided to help with living expenses.

Accountabilities

Under the direction of the Head of Program, the Graduate Professional will carry out the following tasks related to UNIDIR’s Space Security Program:

  • Supporting the development of the Space Security Portal through background research, including an examination of national policies pertaining to space security; 2. Contributing to the ongoing enhancement and digitization of the Space Security Lexicon;
  • Helping with the organization and execution of program activities (such as conferences, workshops, field trips, and meetings), especially UNIDIR’s premier Outer Space Security Conference;
  • Participating in daily duties such as administrative, coordination, and communication; 5. Completing additional work as mandated by program staff.

Abilities and interests

  • Proficiency in space law, space politics, space security, or similar subjects;
  • The capacity to do independent study on matters pertaining to space law and security;
  • The capacity to combine knowledge into succinct, excellent written briefings;
  • Arrangement and synchronization of several jobs;
  • Proficiency in interpersonal, collaborative, and oral communication abilities;
  • Expertise in using InDesign and Microsoft Office products, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
  • Should be interested in disarmament, gender issues, international peace and security, and UN work.

Actively works to enhance programs or services, presents fresh solutions to issues, shows enthusiasm in novel concepts and methods, and is unconstrained by conventional wisdom or ways of thinking.

Client Orientation:

Views everyone who receives services as a “client,” and they make an effort to comprehend and incorporate their clients’ perspectives into their work.

Experience and Qualifications

Education

The United Nations Graduate and Professional Program requires applicants to fulfill one of the following conditions in order to be eligible for a GPP:

  • hold a graduate degree, or its equivalent, be enrolled in an undergraduate program; or
  • possess a university degree (second university degree as mentioned above) and, in the event that they are chosen, must start the graduate professional program within a year following graduation.
  • Applicants having post-graduate degrees in subjects linked to space security, such as international relations, political science, international law, or international security, will be given precedence at UNIDIR.

Employment History

Candidates:

  • are not essential to have professional work experience to participate in the program, however, it will be advantageous if they have prior expertise with or an interest in space, disarmament, or international security;
  • must be proficient with conventional software programs, such as Microsoft Office, and graphic design programs like InDesign;
  • possess a personal dedication to the principles of the Charter as well as a demonstrated deep interest in the work of the UN; and
  • has a track record of effectively interacting with people from diverse cultural origins and beliefs, including the capacity to comprehend and tolerate opposing ideas.

Languages

  • Proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory for the stated role.
  • It is advantageous to know at least one other official UN language.
