About GETFund

A parliamentary act from 2000 established the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), a public trust. Its primary responsibility is to supply funds to support government initiatives for the public sector’s provision of educational infrastructure and facilities at the pre-tertiary and tertiary levels.

Objective of GETFund

The Fund’s goal is to supply funding to support the government’s delivery of education at all levels. The fund’s funds are to be used in the following ways to achieve this goal:

  • to give financial support, through the Ministry, to the agencies and institutions under the Ministry of Education for the construction and upkeep of necessary academic infrastructure and facilities in public educational institutions, especially in tertiary institutions;
  • to give the Scholarship Secretariat additional cash so that it can award scholarships to deserving but underprivileged students so they can attend second cycle and recognized postsecondary institutions in Ghana;
  • also, to provide funds from the Fund through loan scheme agencies and methods that have been approved by the Minister to students enrolled in accredited postsecondary institutions;
  • to offer funding to postsecondary schools through the National Council on Postsecondary Education,

 Sources for the Fund

The fund receives funding from the following sources:

  • a sum equal to 2.5 percent of the current value-added tax rate that the Value Added Tax Service must pay to the Fund or a percentage that Parliament determines is equal to 2.5 percent of the value-added tax rate;
  • any additional funds that Parliament may decide to set up for the Fund; and
  • earnings that come into the Fund via investments made by the Fund’s Board of Trustees;
  • gifts, grants, contributions, and other unrequested gifts to the Fund;
  • Any additional funds or assets that could legally become receivable and vest in the Board of Trustees for the Fund in any way.
