About Cambridge Trust

The Gates Foundation provided the University of Cambridge with a grant of 210 million United States dollars in October of 2000, which led to the establishment of the Gates Cambridge Trust. This is still the single-biggest donation ever made to a university in the UK.

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship program is under the management of the Trust, which oversees all elements of the program. It has a Board of ten prominent Trustees who get together twice a year to deliberate on the overall strategic direction of the program.

Two of these Trustees are appointed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, while the remaining eight Trustees are appointed by the University. The Provost (CEO) is assisted in the management of all operational aspects of the Trust’s activities by a Director of Finance, a Programme Director, and a small administrative team. These individuals report directly to the Provost. On the People page, you can find all of the relevant information.

The Office for Students at the University of Cambridge oversees the Trust and is responsible for its regulation.

About The Scholarship

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation made the largest single grant to a UK university—$210 million—to the University of Cambridge in October 2000, establishing the Gates Cambridge Scholarship program. In October 2001, the initial group of academics moved into residence. Since that time, the Trust has given out more than 2,000 scholarships to students in more than 100 different nations.

Gates Cambridge awards around 80 full-fee scholarships per year to deserving non-UK students who wish to pursue a postgraduate degree in any field offered by the University of Cambridge. There will be about 25 awards available in the US round and 55 awards available in the international round, with about two-thirds of these awards going to PhD candidates.
