Emergency Specialist at Unicef
Key Accountabilities:
Emergency Preparedness
- Takes the right steps to be ready for emergencies by making and keeping up-to-date country contingency plans and setting up early warning systems, so that it can be ready for and respond to specific emergencies effectively.
- Helps come up with and create plans of action for preparing for and responding to emergencies, and checks to make sure that all sectors, including financial ones, follow these plans. Makes sure that the management of emergency preparation and response is coordinated.
- Gives technical advice on how to prepare for and respond to emergencies, including issues related to program management. Gives advice to the country office on how to implement emergency preparedness measures on the ground to improve the country’s ability to be ready for and respond to emergencies.
- Makes and keeps databases of information about countries and regions, and makes sure that information and communication flow, which are important for planning and carrying out emergency preparedness and response management. Finds out what resources are available in areas where emergencies are likely to happen and sets up logistics plans that can be used during an emergency operation to make sure a quick and effective response.
- Plan, organize, and lead training for the office’s staff to help them get ready for and respond to emergencies. Helps create and run emergency training courses for partners who need them. Takes part in other emergency training workshops in the region and helps UNICEF staff and implementing partners get ready for and handle emergencies better.
Emergency Response
- Acts quickly in case of an emergency as a member of the Emergency Response Team, which is sent out right away to set up UNICEF’s presence and do the first tasks related to emergency aid. Checks right away with staff, government officials, other UN agencies, local organizations, and the media to find out what the emergency is and how big it is.
- Helps the Regional Office, HQ Divisions, and field staff assess local emergencies and security issues that affect children and women in the area, and takes part in those assessments. Works with other partners to make a quick assessment of the Core Commitment for Children in Emergencies’ top priority areas.
- Uses the emergency response and preparedness plan when needed. Helps make sure that aid is given on time and that supplies are bought, and keeps an eye on how well UNICEF resources are being used.
Needed Qualifications and Experience
To be able to speak up for every child, you must…
- An advanced college degree (Master’s or higher) in one of the following fields: social sciences, public administration, international law, public health, nutrition, international relations, business administration, or other related fields. Ideally, a mix of management, administration, and technical fields that are relevant to the job.
- At least five years of relevant professional experience at the national and international levels in program/project development, planning, implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and administration related to emergency
- Work experience in the field and special training or experience in managing emergency responses are very desirable.
- You must speak English well. It is helpful to know a local language or another official UN language like Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish.
