POSITION: ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY MANAGER

Asanko Gold Ghana Ltd. (“AGGL”) is a joint venture of Galiano Gold Inc. and Gold Fields. The Multi-Pit Asanko Gold Mine complex in Ghana’s Ashanti Region serves as the company’s major asset. Galiano Gold Inc. manages and operates the Asanko Gold Mine.

Job Description.

We have an amazing opportunity for an eager and committed individual to lead our Environment and Sustainability team as follows:ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY MANAGER

JOB PURPOSE

To manage mining activities to minimize negative environmental effect and maintain Asanko’s positive environmental footprints, including maintaining compliance with all environmental laws and regulations, devising and executing sustainability programs, and identifying opportunities for improvement.

The role is also in charge of frontline management of community issues, as well as day-to-day proactive engagements to foster positive community relationships and societal acceptance in accordance with the Asanko Stakeholder Management Standard.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with Asanko Environmental standards, regulatory requirements, and international best practices.
  • Manage audits and corrective actions for the Environmental Management System.
  • Manage the implementation of Water, Air, Waste, and Closure Management Plans.
  • Manage the parallel reclamation program.
  • Develop, organize, and implement company rehabilitation programs and activities to guarantee that disturbed lands are restored to corporate and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and coordinate strategies to ensure that all national legislation and international standards in the mining industry are followed in land acquisition, compensation, and resettlement.
  • Assemble, establish, and execute Asanko policies, programs, and management systems for stakeholder engagement.
  • Support the development and execution of engagement strategies to strengthen and maintain positive connections with communities, local governments, and local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in order to ensure maximum involvement and cooperation in Asanko SRF initiatives.
  • Assist in the implementation of Asanko’s commitments under the Local Employment, Relationship, and SRF Agreements.
  • Lead the Environment team in optimizing performance, increasing efficiency, and maintaining cost discipline.
  • Prepare and justify the annual environmental and sustainability budget.
  • The list of responsibilities is not complete. Within the scope of the function, the supervisor may delegate additional responsibilities on occasion.

Required Skill or Experience

Knowledge

  • A bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, social science, or a comparable discipline from an accredited college.
  • A minimum of ten years’ experience in environmental and sustainability management in the mining or associated industries.
  • Experience with ISO14001 or an equivalent Environmental Management System.
  • Strong knowledge of Ghana’s environmental laws and regulations.
  • A solid awareness of local culture and practices.
  • Excellent external and community engagement skills.
  • Strong understanding of social investment principles and techniques.
  • Effective land acquisition and resettlement ideas and procedures.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office.

Skills

  • Excellent people management abilities, including the ability to lead and motivate teams.
  • Proven communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.
  • Requirements include strong analytical skills, project management experience, ability to collaborate with people from varied backgrounds, assertiveness, and emotional maturity.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The Environment & Sustainability Manager normally works in an office setting, but they may also spend time communicating with colleagues from various sectors of the firm and engaging communities and stakeholders. Travel to meetings, site visits, or conferences may be required as part of the position.
