University of Ghana New Job Announcement

Project Background

The University of Ghana’s Centre for Migration Studies is looking for people to apply for a research chair on forced migration in the West African sub-region. The right person should be able to bring more attention to knowledge production, knowledge transfer, and knowledge exchange. They should also be able to help senior faculty members and early-career researchers working on issues related to forced displacement connect and learn from each other.

Finally, the right person should be able to bring the research chair’s point of view to policy discussions at the national, regional, and global levels. Applicants should be able to do research on forced displacement using gender-transformative methods, work with civil society, policymakers, and other stakeholders to address forced displacement at the local, national, regional, and global levels, and organize and lead outreach activities in displaced contexts in Ghana and other West African countries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up a mentorship program for young researchers who are just starting out in the field of migration and forced displacement.
  • Work with other IDRC Chairs on the issue of forced migration in other parts of Africa.
  • Communicate with different groups of people through public and social media.
  • Set up policy dialogues, conferences, and capacity-building workshops on forced displacement in Ghana and host them.
  • Be in charge of making artistic projects that reach out to the community in Ghana and the sub-region.
  • Use gender-transformative approaches to do both qualitative and quantitative research on migration and forced displacement in Ghana and the sub-region.
  • Come up with ways for IDRC and CMS to talk to each other often and well.
  • Be in charge of putting out policy briefs and academic papers based on the chair’s research activities.
  • Make the Centre for Migration Studies’ partnerships and networks stronger both locally and internationally.
  • Make it easier for the Center for Migration Studies on migration and forced displacement to get and keep money.
  • Come up with plans for how to keep the forced displacement chair at the University of Ghana going even after the IDRC funding runs out in five years.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A PhD in Migration Studies, the Social Sciences, or a related field of study
  • Must be a professor in migration or a field that is closely related to it.
  • Strong knowledge of how to do research on migration and forced displacement using gender-transformative approaches.
  • Should have experience getting grants, such as for an international multidisciplinary project on forced migration.
  • Must have worked with CSOs, government stakeholders, and community leaders, as well as led community outreach among groups that were forced to move.
  • Should have experience with policy dialogue and engagement on issues related to migration, such as forced relocation.
  • Must be able to use both qualitative and quantitative research methods to study issues related to migration, such as being moved against your will.
  • Must be a good team player with good people skills and communication skills.
  • They can speak and write English very well.
  • Lots of articles in relevant journals and in the field of migration and being moved against your will.
  • Should be known by the public and policymakers, and they should know how to do research using a multidisciplinary and intersectoral approach.
  • Be able to use different methods when doing research on conflict and disaster-related migration.
