Concerning North Carolina State University
Raleigh, North Carolina, is home to NC State University. Raleigh is about halfway down the East Coast of the United States. Through world-class teaching and study since 1887, we’ve worked hard to meet your needs. We are now in the top 1% of universities around the world.
The fact that NC State is a land-grant school means that we have to let everyone come and learn. We are a Research 1 university, which means that people all over the world know us for our big ideas and big effects. We are also a public university that cares about society, fairness, sharing what we learn, and doing what’s best for everyone.
You can get all the chances and tools you’d expect from North Carolina’s biggest university, NC State, but you also get the care and attention of a smaller school. And our college is always ranked as one of the best values in the country.
History
The North Carolina General Assembly started what was then called the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts on March 7, 1887. The college stood for ideas that were quickly changing higher education. The main one was the idea that colleges shouldn’t just be for a select few people and that the kids of farmers, mechanics, and other workers should be able to get the chances and benefits of going to college.
Under the federal Morrill Land Grant Act of 1862, NC State was created. This law let the U.S. government give federally owned land to the states so they could build colleges that would teach “agriculture and the mechanical arts.” In the fall of 1889, the brand-new school opened for the first time. There were 72 children and six teachers in one building. A new government program in the early 1900s led to a lot of outreach work at the college. The Smith-Lever Act, which was passed in 1914, made land-grant schools and the U.S. Department of Agriculture work together on education.
As part of this new cooperative extension program, the colleges would send trained staff to meet with farmers all over the state and teach them how to farm in a real-world setting. Because of this, North Carolina set up the Cooperative Agricultural Extension Service at NC State. This service is now called NC State Extension and is part of the N.C. Cooperative Extension partnership.
By the 1920s, North Carolina State College (as it was then) had grown beyond its basic focus on farming and mechanics. It now had schools of business, engineering, textiles, education, and textiles, as well as a graduate school. Higher education across the country had trouble with money during the Great Depression, and State College was no different.
Changing of Name
In the years after World War II, when the G.I. Bill brought thousands of veterans to school, the campus grew at a rate that had never been seen before. Over the next few decades, the college kept adding to its courses by making schools of design, forestry, physical and mathematical sciences, and arts and social sciences. During these years of growth, the name was changed again. This time, it became North Carolina State University at Raleigh, which is now the official name of NC State.
