Study In UK: 2024 British Academy Global Innovation Fellowships

Description of the scholarship:
The International Science Partnerships Fund, established by the UK government, is funding this effort. This £119 million fund is intended to develop potential and advance prosperity.
It promotes collaboration between UK researchers and innovators and their foreign counterparts on urgent current topics by positioning research and innovation as essential to the UK’s international relations. A partnership made up of the top research and innovation institutes in the UK is responsible for managing this fund under the direction of the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology.
The main objective of the Global Innovation Fellowships program is to provide possibilities for advancement to early- and mid-career academics in the humanities and social sciences who are based in the UK. This includes developing one’s abilities, growing one’s network, and advancing one’s career in fields like the arts and culture, business, and public and private policy.
These fellowships are intended to address problems that call for original solutions. The Global Innovation Fellowships will help the researchers in the SHAPE community build stronger relationships outside of the academic realm. This will make it easier to translate knowledge and improve personal skills.
This new initiative from the British Academy gives Global Innovation Fellowship recipients the possibility to become part of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
As part of this trial phase, the relationship sees fellowship recipients and Carnegie working together in a way that gives each of them access to new ideas and a wider network. Through the establishment and strengthening of ties between policy and academics, this arrangement will enable grantees to advance knowledge sharing and develop fresh perspectives. Through a diversity of viewpoints, it seeks to encourage creative ideas and responses to policy concerns.
Benefits of the scholarship
Up to three one-year fellowships are being offered by the Academy and will be housed in Carnegie’s offices in the United States (Washington, DC, or California). These are available as awards with a maximum value of £150,000 for a period of 12 months (with 80% full economic costing).
Nationalities that qualify:
International and domestic students of all nationalities are eligible for this fellowship.
Eligibility Requirements
There are no preconceived notions regarding the discipline history of the prize recipient, but the applicant will need to show that they have a thorough grasp of the pertinent topics, such as the relevant policy environment and the structural difficulties it faces.
Where appropriate, language proficiency is helpful but not necessary.

Aims of the scheme
This program is funded by the UK International Science Partnerships Fund. The £119m International Science Partnerships Fund promotes potential and prosperity. It puts UK scholars and innovators at the center of international relations, helping them collaborate on today’s biggest issues. Science, Innovation, and Technology departments run it. A collaboration of renowned UK research and innovation agencies delivered it.
The Global Innovation Fellowships help UK-based early- and mid-career humanities and social science researchers develop their skills, networks, and careers in the creative and cultural, public, private, and policy sectors to solve innovative problems. The Global Innovation Fellowships will help SHAPE researchers build new and deeper connections outside academia, allowing knowledge mobilization, translation, and skill development.
This is a new program for the British Academy, and we are pleased to offer Global Innovation Fellowship award holders the chance to work at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (primarily in the US, but also in other regions).
In a complex, changing, and increasingly contested world, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace generates strategic ideas and independent analysis, supports diplomacy, and trains the next generation of international scholar-practitioners to help countries and institutions solve the hardest global problems and maintain peace. It leads worldwide foreign policy think tanks. Carnegie experts from diverse disciplines and perspectives collaborate across borders on democracy, technology, and climate change, with deep knowledge of regional contexts in Asia, Africa, Europe, India, the Middle East, Russia, and Eurasia.
Fellowship Goal
The goal is for Carnegie and the fellowship award bearer to benefit from new viewpoints and expand their networks. The award recipient will deepen and create new ties between policy and academics, enabling knowledge mobilization and translation and the chance to generate innovative policy solutions from a distinct perspective.
The Academy is providing three 1-year fellowships in Carnegie’s Washington DC or California locations. These awards are up to £150,000 for 12 months (80% Full Economic Costing).
Person Specification and Applicant Eligibility
Early-career and mid-career scholars working on the themes below who can bring new insights to the difficulties are invited to apply to the British Academy. The scheme does not accept independent researcher applications this cycle.
Applicants may have analytical, policy, and practical experience in many disciplines, concepts, and methods.
Applicants must be UK residents with a long-term appointment that will last at least as long as the award duration. You must be an early-career or mid-career researcher at a UK institution (e.g., HEI or IRO) in the Humanities and Social Sciences that is an approving-organization in Flexi-Grant, the British Academy’s grant management system. This institution will receive the award terms if successful.
Award winners can build new collaborations and use the insights to inform, influence, and develop their future. Openness to fresh ideas and inventive techniques is what we want. You will like collaborating across academics, policy, and practice and be challenge-driven and committed to integrating the partner organization’s perspectives, needs, and priorities.
All applicants should assess the potential for academic-non-academic interaction and its relevance to their career and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace’s ‘Working at and with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace’ requirements must also be met.
Applicants can only possess one similar British Academy award.
Postgraduate students are not eligible for Academy grant support, and applicants must confirm in the personal details section(s) that they are not working toward a Ph.D., awaiting a viva voce exam, or awaiting examiner corrections.
Scope of the Fellowships
The following five areas are open for applications.
Sustainability, Climate, Geopolitics.
A Fellowship in this area would address our interconnected climate, sustainability, and nature-based concerns. Just transitions while addressing climate change and biodiversity loss are essential for inclusive economies and society.
This will have global and regional repercussions, where analysis and incisive ideas that span research and policy action are essential to addressing the interconnected climate and ecological crises and adaptive and mitigation strategies.
Climate/ecological diplomacy experts who focus on the geopolitical ramifications of climate change and ecological disturbance are encouraged to apply.
Technological and international issues.
A Fellowship in this area would examine how technology and international affairs interact. This could include the growing interdependence of technology and foreign, security, and trade policy; the governance, ethics, regulation, and/or societal engagement related to technological advancement and emerging technologies like AI; or the impact of technology on global supply chains.
Modern geostrategic understanding of technology’s international potential and threats and varied international approaches to technological growth is crucial.
Analyzing how nations, commercial actors, and other stakeholders account for and act to support their interests, values, and ethics in developing and implementing technology developments and their geopolitical and economic effects is crucial.
Democracy, conflict, governance.
A Fellowship in this area could examine global democracy, conflict, and governance concerns and their relationships. The global trend of closing space for civil society, the changing nature of civic activism, support for democracy and human rights internationally, a comparative lens on democracies’ challenges, methods of reducing violence, efforts to stabilize conflicts in fragile and conflict-affected states, sociopolitical polarization, and diversity and representation in politics and civil society.
World Order and Institutions.
A Fellowship in this area could examine problems and views on global order and chaos and international institutions. No single solution exists for global (dis)order.
This intricacy involves shifting periods and beliefs and self-understandings that have driven the need for status, recognition, and a varied international order in different regions of the world. Analyzing this changing terrain is essential to achieving peace, prosperity, and justice.
Nuclear Policy.
Nuclear threats are rising yet underappreciated. Carnegie’s Nuclear Policy Program diagnoses acute nuclear hazards, informs solution debates, and engages international actors to improve security.
A Fellowship in this area could study deterrence, disarmament, nonproliferation, nuclear security, and energy with Carnegie academics through research, capacity building, dialogue, and policymaker and industry involvement.
There are no preconceived notions about the award holder’s disciplinary background, but the applicant must demonstrate a solid awareness of the relevant topics, including the policy landscape and systemic challenges. Where relevant, language abilities are desired but not required.
