Indigenous peoples, particularly the Haudenosaunee and Anishinabeg nations, have long used the land where the McGill McCall MacBain Scholarships are located as a meeting and trading place.
Concerning McGill’s McCall MacBain Scholarships
The McGill McCall MacBain Awards are the first comprehensive, leadership-focused master’s and professional degree awards in Canada. Through the scholarship program, a varied group of students who have an inherent desire to improve the lives of others and have shown leadership potential come together to aim to lead with purpose.
With a historic $200 million donation, John and Marcy McCall MacBain revealed the scholarships in February 2019. It was the biggest gift in Canadian history at the time. They believed it was essential that Canada have a comprehensive master’s-level scholarship that builds on but is not limited to, academic excellence based on their work over the years with some of the top scholarships in the world, such as the Rhodes Scholarships in Oxford, the Mandela Rhodes Scholarships in Cape Town, and the Kupe Scholarships in New Zealand.
Regarding McGill University
Located in Quebec, Canada, McGill University is a public university that was established in 1821. The Macdonald campus in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue and the downtown campus in Montreal are the university’s two campuses. The distance between the two campuses is about twenty kilometers. English is the predominant language of instruction; nevertheless, almost 20% of university students said that French was their mother tongue in a recent survey.
In actuality, French is the native tongue of about 50% of Montreal’s inhabitants. With students from more than 150 countries, international students make up about 25% of the student body. Both campuses offer university housing for graduate and undergraduate students.
The university offers about 300 different programs of study through its ten faculties and schools, which include agriculture and environmental sciences, arts, dentistry, education, engineering, law, management, medical, music, and science. The majority of students at the university are undergraduates—roughly two-thirds.
International students pay more in tuition, and McGill has a semester-based academic calendar. The university is the oldest medical school in Canada and is connected to several teaching hospitals.
More than 40 McGill research centers, including the McGill Centre for Bioinformatics, the Centre on Population Dynamics, and the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy, as well as other connected institutions and hospitals, are home to the university’s research activities. One of the university’s successes in research is the development of the first artificial blood cell.
