AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana) Limited’s Obuasi Gold Mine is almost done with the redevelopment phase, which will make it more modern, efficient, and long-term profitable. The underground mining operation is fully automated and is set up to mine an average of 5,000 t of ore per day.

We’re looking for self-starters with experience to join our team as: SOCIO DEVELOPMENT OFFICER

ROLE/REASON

The Social Development Officer will help the Social Development and Gender Superintendent put in place sustainable social development programs that are in line with the Obuasi Mine’s existing Socio-Economic Development Plans and are based on the Sustainable Development Goals, Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria, and National and Local Development Plans. These programs will help build strong, self-sufficient communities and, in turn, ensure a sustainable future for the mine.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Figure out what the risks are for each task and make sure they are controlled before and while the task is being done.
• Report all problems and make sure they have been looked into and that the right steps have been taken on time.
• Do all the corrective actions that have been given to you or that fall under your responsibility, and make sure they are done on time.
• Make sure all safety key performance indicators (KPIs) are met, such as reporting all incidents and taking all corrective actions assigned in a timely manner.
• Follow the environmental work rules that the Departmental Manager gives you.
• Look into environmental problems in the areas where you work.
• Go to all scheduled and assigned training meetings about the environment.
• Put in place effective, needs-based programs to improve education at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels, working with the right institutions and stakeholders.
• Work with the relevant institutions and stakeholders to create Youth Empowerment programs that meet the needs of young people and have an effect.
• Run effective, needs-based Community Health and Safety programs with the help of the right institutions and stakeholders.
• Set up effective water and sanitation programs for communities based on their needs.
• Help with the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of Social Infrastructure projects in host communities that are driven by needs and have an impact.
• Help come up with, implement, monitor, and evaluate effective Arts, Culture, and Heritage interventions based on needs.

Needed Qualifications and Experience

• A degree from a college or university that is relevant to the field of social development

Experience

• At least three years of work experience in the same field

Skills that are technical

• Hands-on experience with putting social development programs and projects into action in a mining setting.
• Experience with participatory methods and how to use them.
• Knowledge of SDGs and EESG and how to use them when making programs.
• Knowledge of international standards that apply to sustainable development (IFC standards on Social Sustainability, VPSHR, GEITI etc.)
• A good understanding of how community investment is driven by shared value

Some other skills

• Skilled at negotiating
• Aware of how the MMDAs plan for growth and development
• Able to work as part of a team
