POSITION: Farmer Support Agent Project Officer 

The Farmer Support Agent (FSA) Project Officer will oversee groups of FSAs in Ghana, providing capacity-building training to rural client groups such as Village Savings & Loans Associations (VSLAs), facilitating linkages between these clients and Opportunity International’s financial institution partners, and assisting in the collection of client surveys to measure impact. This function is also in charge of creating and maintaining partner connections, conducting value chain evaluations, identifying significant risks, assuring project deliverables, and suggesting solutions to implementation challenges.

Responsibilities

Provide management support.

  • Assist the Agriculture Finance team with the general management and administration of the FSA network, which includes several project partners.
  • Take the initiative to establish positive working connections with all stakeholders, including farmers, financial institution partners, private sector partners, and Ghanaian government employees.
  • Monitor the FSAs’ data collection efforts and give technical support as needed.
  • Provide troubleshooting and systems support to partners and FSAs that use the client management system (CommCare).
  • Facilitate frequent FSA training of trainer sessions in collaboration with project partners.
  • Ensure the successful delivery of FSA-led training at the farmer group level.
  • Identify barriers and bottlenecks to the model’s success and, when possible, propose and implement remedies.

Partner Coordination

  • Develop a comprehensive knowledge of the project partners’ goals and objectives.
  • Determine whether the model may be improved to better suit partner objectives.
  • Lead the effective use of data, assuring value addition for Opportunity and all partners, and collaborate with financial institution partner staff to achieve mutual goals in building and growing the business through the project.
  • Develop a positive working connection with financial institution agricultural finance staff and a thorough understanding of the financial products available.
  • Coordinate with financial institution partner branches to ensure consistent communication about on-the-ground elements that may impact project performance.
  • Liaise with financial institution partner personnel and Opportunity to ensure project purpose and goals are aligned.

Reporting

  • Support data collecting for internal and external narrative reporting. Monitor data integrity and output metrics regularly; determine data requirements; and generate monthly reports for distribution to key partners.
  • Collaborate with the Opportunity Agriculture Finance team to establish effective management reporting systems and procedures.
  • Opportunity Agriculture Finance management receives weekly progress reports on project deliverables and difficulties.

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Assist Opportunity in carrying out impact assessments utilizing monitoring and evaluation tools created by Opportunity.
  • Track progress against the logical framework indicators.
  • Follow client success stories.
  • Report into Opportunity with impact data to assess the new products’ efficacy, scalability, and impact, and make recommendations for further development.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Supervising Farmer Support Agents

Qualifications:

  • A degree or diploma in agriculture, community development, finance, or a closely connected sector.
  • Worked with rural communities before.
  • Practical experience with community-based financial institutions (VSLAs, etc.)
  • Project management abilities are required to efficiently carry out activities/tasks while maintaining high standards constantly.
  • Proficiency in using MS Office software and Android apps. Must be able to demonstrate competence.
  • Self-empowerment allows for the development of open communication, teamwork, and trust, all of which are required to enhance agricultural performance and a customer-service-oriented culture.
  • Relevant professional qualifications in agriculture, microfinance, banking, information and communication technology, extension services, finance, or marketing are advantageous.
  • Understanding and dedication to achieving Opportunity International’s purpose and basic principles.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Written and verbal fluency in English and one Ghanaian language are necessary. Must be able to attend and fully participate in meetings held in English.

Travel Requirements

  • The position will be based in Aburi, with frequent domestic travel of up to 70% throughout the project areas.
  • International travel may be required once or twice each year for team meetings or cross-learning visits.
