ROLE TITLE: Poly Welder / Pump Person

About This Role:
To facilitate butt welding of poly (HDPE) pipes utilising a variety of techniques, as well as the safe and controlled connection of in-pit sumps to specified ponds.
In this role, you will
Pump Operations: Planning and Execution
- Communicate with and receive instructions from the Dewatering Supervisor prior to carrying out tasks to establish where water will be pumped and to keep the system operational.
- Perform inspections on the following aspects prior to carrying out work:
- Check pipelines and valves for leaks.
- Fuel level at the pump.
- Sumps and boreholes encircling the pit.
- Install pumps in stages or phases, then link pipelines to them.
- Complete pre-start check of pumps and poly welding machine.
- Report any faults discovered to the dewatering supervisor.
- Take flow readings from boreholes and report any problems to the Dewatering Supervisor.
- Request flow rate feedback from the process plant or water treatment facility.
- Disconnect all pumps used in blasting activity.
- Check the pressure gauges, RPMs, vacuum gauges and load factors, then record them on the key performance indicator (KPI) sheet.
- Obtain and obtain flow metre readings at the beginning and end of the shift.
- Ensure that pumps are inspected and ready to feed water to water bowers for dust suppression.
- Install the standpipes.
- Ensure that pipes slip safely along the pit’s high walls.
- Monitor the pumps’ operation to ensure that the water in the sump(s) is pumped from the pit to the allocated pond.
Polywelding Operations Planning and Execution
- Understand the kind, size, and fitting requirements for welding poly pipes.
- Stay within the job’s limitations.
- Clean and prepare plastic surfaces before welding, cutting, gouging, bevelling, or filing.
- Plastic pipe can be shaped and bent using hand tools, machinery, or heating procedures.
- Pipes are measured and aligned for connection using hand tools and measurement equipment.
- Fuse HDPE parts via a variety of welding, precision, and bolting processes.
- Clean, file, and polish the finished welding product.
- Construct, install, and lay pipelines in the pit, as well as flip pipelines over steep walls.
- Maintain QA/QC standards throughout pipe welding and fusion processes.
- Fit attachments and hoses between the pit and the pond.
- Use a fusion machine for welding.
General Execution
- Plan and prioritise your own activities on a daily basis.
- Read, interpret, and follow drawings and plans for guidance on all pump and polywelding activities.
- Obtain the equipment and consumables needed to complete tasks from the Supervisor.
- Ensure that all works in progress and activities adhere to specifications, norms, and regulations.
- Contribute to meeting mine water treatment and dewatering output targets.
- Participate in routine tool and safety audits.
- Participate in further training to improve your skills.
- Provide verbal feedback to the Supervisor on the activities done that day.
Stakeholder Management and Engagement
- Liaise with the Load and Haul Supervisor to obtain the equipment needed for pump installations.
- Communicate with the Hydrotechnical team and send completed KPI sheets to them.
- Liaise with the blast team to determine blast times and make safety precautions for pumps and pipelines.
- Ensure that you’re dewatering, and water treatment shift work satisfies established legislative criteria.
Health and Safety Management
- Inspect work areas to ensure they meet internal Newmont and external regulatory standards.
- Adhere to internal Newmont water management and dewatering guidelines.
- Follow safe dewatering procedures.
- Maintain a strong focus on safety during all operations.
- Provide hands-on help to colleagues during operational activities to ensure that safe work practices are followed.
- Attend the daily morning safety meetings.
Your Training, Skills, and Experience Checklist
Formal qualifications (including professional registrations):
- Senior High School Certificate.
Additional Knowledge
- MINCOM Equipment Competency.
- Driving Licence E. Proficiency in operating medium to heavy equipment.
- Able to interpret fusion parameters.
Experience
- A minimum of two to three years of experience working in a big open pit mine’s polywelding/pump setting.

- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Work requires necessary PPE such as a helmet, goggles, high visibility clothes, safety harness, ear plugs, and dust mask, depending on the working conditions.
- Incumbent is occasionally required to work overtime.
